Children started building with blocks together and found some chalk nearby. They used the chalk to color the inside of a mortar and pestle and then asked if they could use the chalk to color the blocks. Even though the first instinct may be to say no, I asked if they agreed (they did) and said yes. What followed was magical. The learning, communicating, collaborating, imagination, ideas, and engagement flowed for over an hour.

October is my favorite month of the year as we focus on Building Community...Working Together and Helping Each Other, which sets the foundation for our year. Today, during gather/circle, I read the preschoolers some poems. Then I asked if they wanted to try writing a poem together & I got a resounding YES!

I suggested they look around for ideas to write about and they immediately got to work. I facilitated by writing their words and reading back each poem. They were so excited and engaged as they kept choosing new things to tell me about, even helping each other get their ideas across. These preschoolers continue to surprise me. I love these poems so, so, much!!

At the end of September, we worked on All About Me books. The first thing we did was draw self portraits. We talk about the shape of our heads, and practiced observing by looking at each other and noticing where our features are located. We used descriptor words to help us think about where to place things such as; at the top, in the middle, underneath, at the bottom, as well as long, short, curly, straight, etc.

Each morning, I choose materials to put onto our outdoor 4'x4' wooden table that sits on a piece of artificial grass under a shelter. This space is specifically a place to bring inside toys outside. Yesterday, I put out a container of unifix cubes, and a sorting tray with laces, mini mushroom dolls, mini rubber animals, clothespins and an egg crate.

As often happens, children immediately got to work creating, imagining and building with zero guidance from me. A3.11 figured out that the laces could go into the holes of the unifix cubes thus connecting them. E3.8 and Au3.11 both made magic wands with the unifix cubes. Look at the photos and notice how both children made their wands using an AB pattern, 2 colors that repeat back and forth in pattern, which is the same type of pattern on this month's calendar. (Our calendar that we love to use at circle has numbers that are on apples and owls. Our pattern of the month is Apple, Owl; or Red, Brown; or AB).

Earlier this week, kids were in the "woods" hard at work. I asked what they were doing, and they said camping! They had brought materials with them, including containers, tools, and a babydoll to take care of. This isn't "just play," this is planning, negotiation, organizing, working together, building fine motor strength (as they tore leaves and flowers to make lunch), high level thinking, and more! A3.11 was using sticks to "carve" and L4 was rubbing sticks together to pretend to make fire.

Now that all of our big 5/6 year olds have gone off to kindergarten, I wanted to ask the 3 and 4 year olds to give me some words about preschool.

"Where we do lots of fun things, and we do swinging and playing and digging and playing in the kitchen, those are all fun things we can do and we can play in the library and we can read books.

E6 arrived at school with a plan this morning. He asked for aluminum and said he was going to make a tractor. His plan was to flatten the aluminum, then form it, and lastly paint it. He started by collecting cans and using a shovel to flatten them. Then, he asked for tape to connect the pieces. He found tape didn't work quite as he envisioned, so he asked for glue. The glue was also tricky and he tried a combination of glue and tape.

As children arrived throughout the morning, many joined in, supporting E6's idea. A3.10 brought over safety cones to show friends they should be careful. Then, Au3.10 asked for markers and a few friends started creating with markers on the giant cardboard which we put down on the driveway to contain the glue.
