🎃🚗 We’re just a few weeks away from the 13th Annual Trunk or Treat! Join the Monson Ptsa on Saturday, October 24 from 4:00–5:30 p.m. at Monson High School for an evening of Halloween fun for the whole family!

👻 Games, activities & plenty of treats
🏆 Prizes for the top three decorated trunks
🌭 Hot dogs, hot chocolate, cotton candy & popcorn available for purchase from the Class of 2030, with proceeds supporting student activities

Admission: One bag of candy per child (approximately 50 pieces or a $5–$10 value)

A quick reminder for MPS families as we head into the long weekend:

• Mon. Oct. 12: No School – Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus Day
• Tues. Oct. 13: Full Day of School
• Wed. Oct. 14: Half Day – Parent-Teacher Conferences (Quarry Hill & Granite Valley dismiss at 11:30 a.m. & Monson High School dismisses at 10:35 a.m.)

We hope our students, families, and staff enjoy the long weekend, and we’ll see everyone back at school on Tuesday! ☀️🍂

Preparing students for life beyond the classroom means giving them opportunities to build practical skills they can use in their everyday lives and future.

Students in Personal Finance recently welcomed Amber Messer from Monson Savings Bank for a conversation about real-world money management. Students learned about banking and savings options, budgeting, protecting themselves from bank fraud, and making informed financial decisions.

Thank you to Amber and Monson Savings Bank for sharing your time and expertise with our students and helping them build financial skills they can carry with them well beyond high school! 👏

What does it really take for a child to become a strong reader? 📚

In this next back-to-school video, Superintendent Foster introduces the Science of Reading and explains how decades of research on how children learn to read are shaping literacy instruction across Monson Public Schools.

At the heart of the Science of Reading is the understanding that students need both:

• Foundational skills to connect letters with sounds, build words, and develop fluent reading skills
• Background knowledge to understand, interpret, and make meaning from what they read

Our new English Language Arts curricula, Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) for Grades K–5 and Into Literature for Grades 6–8, are designed to strengthen both.

In the early grades, this means dedicated instruction in foundational reading skills alongside knowledge-building lessons. Across grade levels, students will also engage with texts that build their understanding of topics in areas such as science and social studies while strengthening their reading and writing skills.

Watch the full video to hear Superintendent Foster explain the science behind this approach, why background knowledge matters so much for reading comprehension, and how our new curriculum supports students as they grow into confident, proficient readers.

🍩🥧🍿 Support Our Students This Fall! There are several fundraisers happening across Monson Public Schools, with opportunities to support students from Pre-K through high school!

From Krispy Kreme Donuts and Lyman Orchards pies to Double Good Popcorn, each fundraiser helps support student activities, programs, and experiences across our schools.

⚽ And the fundraising continues at Community Soccer Night this Friday, October 2! The Class of 2027 will be selling game-night concessions, and the Class of 2028 will host a bake sale while our Mustangs take the field.

🌎✈️ Costa Rica & Panama | Spring 2028: Thank you to the families who joined us for the recent information meeting about Monson High School’s Spring 2028 trip to Costa Rica and Panama!

A reminder for families interested in participating: students can currently enroll with a $95 deposit, and those who enroll by October 2 will receive a $250 discount.

Space is limited and enrollment is first-come, first-served.

Students who enroll will also have access to a personal fundraising page and may apply for EF’s Global Citizen Scholarship.

⚡ Mrs. Murphy’s fourth grade students recently explored energy through their PLTW Energy Exploration unit! ⚡

Using an Energy Stick, students discovered how a complete circuit allows energy to flow. When everyone joined hands to complete the circuit, the Energy Stick lit up and made a sound. When the connection was broken, it stopped.

Students even connected the lesson back to their classroom community, recognizing how staying connected helps spread kindness, encouragement, and positive energy to one another.

We’re proud of our fourth grade students for their curiosity, teamwork, and enthusiasm for learning!
