The great State of Alabama became the 22nd state to join the Union on December 14, 1819. The land that became Northern and Central Alabama was transferred to the U.S. from the British at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. The southern coastal area had been under Spanish control and was acquired by the U.S. through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. From 1798 to 1817, the land was part of the Mississippi Territory; it became the Alabama Territory in 1819.

The Alabama State bird is the beautiful yellowhammer. The State flower is the camellia. The State mammal is the black bear ๐Ÿป. The State wildflower is the Oak Leaf Hydrangea. Alabamaโ€™s State tree ๐ŸŒฒ is the Southern Longleaf Pine. The State motto is ๐˜ž๐˜ฆ ๐˜‹๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜–๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜™๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต๐˜ด.

Alabama's Capital is Montgomery, with a population of about 195,000. One significant industry is aerospace. The U.S. Space and Rocket ๐Ÿš€ Center is in Huntsville, AL.

It's time for lesson B236. Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท will discuss ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต, ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ต, and ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต. ๐˜›๐˜ฐ ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต is to plop down on your backside. ๐˜›๐˜ฐ ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ต is to place something down. ๐˜›๐˜ฐ ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต is to show someone to a chair or provide a person with a ๐Ÿช‘ chair, or it can mean to fit something into place.

1. โ€œโ€˜Homicide was called in,โ€™ Clay said, ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด his water bottle off to the side.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: Clay ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ฏ his water bottle, or ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ต it.

2. โ€œShe flipped it over on the back counter and ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜ two books ๐Ÿ“š on top of the mug so that the troll was trapped inside.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— says: She ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ฏ ๐Ÿ‘‡ two books, or ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ต them.

4. โ€œThe Englishman ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜ himself astride a hardened chair, leaning on its back; he was large limbed.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: Although ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ต might well be used in British English in this situation, in American English the proper choice would be ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ. He ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ himself ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ข ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ณ.

Great natural areas to explore in Alabama include the Little Run Canyon and the Sipsey Wilderness Area.

Dear Merry โ˜บ๏ธ Students,
Weโ€™ve all heard the stories. In the early 1930โ€™s, during the Great Depression, many banks ๐Ÿฆ went bankrupt. Since many people were in dire straits, banks often experienced high loan losses. Rumors would start that a certain bank was experiencing insurmountable financial difficulties. Depositors would rush to the bank ๐Ÿฆ to withdraw their money ๐Ÿ’ฐ while funds were still available. This phenomenon is called a ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ. Even if the bank were in excellent financial condition, it would not have enough cash ๐Ÿ’ฒ๐Ÿ’ต to pay out all depositors; much of the bankโ€™s assets would be loaned out to borrowers.
The Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 was passed to forestall some of the traps that led to the banking collapse. Key provisions included a prohibition on banks engaging in investment banking; traditional banks could no longer trade securities, an activity that added operational risk. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was established. Knowing deposits are backed by insurance assures depositors that a bankโ€™s bankruptcy doesn't mean their money ๐Ÿ’ฒ is lost. Also, payment of interest on demand deposits (checking accounts) was forbidden.

It's time for lesson B235. A ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ is a single word used to refer to a group of people, animals, or things. In American English, followed by Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท, collective nouns are nearly always considered singular. In British English, collective nouns are treated as singular unless the emphasis is on the individual member.

1. โ€œAudience ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ long pews with an aisleway up the middle that led to a podium and microphone ๐ŸŽค.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ is an uncountable or mass noun that acts as a collective noun. It refers to an arrangement of a group of chairs or seats and is treated as singular.
Rewrite: Audience seating ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ long pews with an aisleway up the middle that led to a podium and microphone ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ.

2. โ€œMost of the rest of the team, waiting in one of the ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ'๐˜€ van ๐Ÿš, had received the same message from Sam.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: I have included this with collective nouns, but the collective noun ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ isn't causing the problem. ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ is considered singular. The confusion is from the phrase ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ'๐˜ด ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ. If this phrase meant ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ, then ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ would have been plural. So this must mean, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ.
Rewrite: Most of the rest of the team, waiting in one team member's van, had received the same message from Sam.
Note: It is not incorrect as originally written; it is just unclear.

3. โ€œHe is as committed as ever to finding your ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐˜†, killing ๐—ถ๐˜, and retrieving the time boxes.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— says: This sentence is correct as written. Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— included this example to demonstrate that it can be proper to refer to people as ๐˜ช๐˜ต. ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜บ is a collective noun treated as singular; third person singular objective form is either ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ, ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, or ๐˜ช๐˜ต. Miss Pig ๐Ÿ– apologizes if she has made you clutch your pearls ๐Ÿฆช.

The 1933 modifications established a stable banking ๐Ÿฆ environment for decades. The Glass-Steagall Act has been modified, and the financial scene is riskier for participants. Depositors and investors must exercise caution and be aware of risks and details of government insurance.

Dear Matchless Students,
In 1844, Britain controlled the land that would become Canada. The United States was expanding westward and had territory that reached to the Pacific Ocean. ๐ŸŒŠ But the Pacific Northwest territory was in dispute. Britain and the United States had jointly occupied for 28 years much of what is now the States of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon, along with much of what became British Columbia. In 1844, James K. Polk campaigned on the slogan โ€œ54ยฐ40โ€™ or fightโ€, meaning the USA would fight Britain for all the land south of latitude 54ยฐ40โ€™, which is just south of southernmost Alaska. In fact, with both sides keen to avoid war, a compromise was reached to extend the border westward along the 49th parallel. However, the border would jog south to allow Britain to continue control of Vancouver Island. ๐Ÿ๏ธ
Sadly, the agreement was unclear about the borderline through the San Juan Islands in these waters. Consequently, in 1859, the Pig ๐Ÿท War, Pig ๐Ÿ– and Potato ๐Ÿฅ” War, or the Pig ๐Ÿฝ Episode ensued. There were no human casualties. A farmer living on San Juan Island found a neighbor's pig ๐Ÿ– eating potatoes in his garden. This wasn't the first time, so he shot the pig ๐Ÿ– (!) and offered the neighbor $10. The neighbor wanted $100. Eventually, the military ๐Ÿช– was called in.

It's time for lesson B234. Spelling, people, spelling! Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says that ๐—ฌ๐—ฒ๐˜€! It is worth learning proper spelling.

1. โ€œThe very thought ๐Ÿ’ญ of it, in front of his mother, all these years later made me ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ต.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: A ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ is a mechanical device used to aid in pulling heavy ๐Ÿชจ objects. ๐˜›๐˜ฐ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ is to flinch or grimace. The word should be ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ.

2. โ€œIt was a ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐˜† sort of place.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: ๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜บ could be used to describe people who make an instant connection (they click) or to describe a mechanical feeling or sound, as with a keyboard. ๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ refers to the behavior of a close group that doesn't let outsiders in. In the example, ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ถ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜† should be used.

3. โ€œIt was heart-wrenching to pull away and see the twins โ™Š and Taara linking arms with Saby Jnr โ€“ all ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐Ÿ€โšพ๐ŸฅŽ their eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ out.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— says: ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ can refer to living a lavish lifestyle and spending money ๐Ÿ’ฐ freely. ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ธ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ is a term for messily crying ๐Ÿ˜ญ. ๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด is the correct word to use here.

4. โ€œIn the heat of the moment ๐Ÿ”ฅ, people scrambled from their homes ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ with ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ of water ๐Ÿ’ฆ giving no regard to the doors that protected their homes.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ– says: ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด means to become ashen-faced or to become less important. ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ด are buckets. ๐Ÿชฃ ๐™‹๐™–๐™ž๐™ก๐™จ should be used here.

Let's hope the military ๐Ÿช– is never needed to solve your neighborhood disputes! At least it worked in this case. The border was finally agreed upon.

Nature Camp is Loads of Fun! ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŽฏ

Dear Marvelous Students,
Hurray! Summertime means spending a week at YMCA Nature Camp Patterson. The girl-child will be on one side of the Lake, while Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท will be on the other side at Camp PigAMore. There are so many fun ๐Ÿ˜Š activities at camp. We meet other kids and make new friends. We go on hikes ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฅพ and learn about trees ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ, plants ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฑ, and wildlife ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒ. We can use the lake for swimming ๐Ÿฅฝ, fishing ๐ŸŽฃ, and canoeing ๐Ÿ›ถ. We make craft items and get to shoot arrows ๐Ÿน at targets ๐ŸŽฏ. In the evenings, we help to make a campfire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Then we tell stories, sing songs ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽธ, and make sโ€™mores and toasted marshmallows.

It's time for lesson B233. Let's consider proper verb tense following ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ or ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ.
Verbs following ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ must agree with the noun immediately following the verb. For verbs following ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, the verb must agree with the subject discussed at that location.
If the verb is followed by the expression ๐˜ข ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง, look to the noun following that expression.

1. โ€œThereโ€™๐˜€ a lot of ways the district could address a $2.2 million deficit for next school year, and theyโ€™re looking to make the biggest moves in the near future.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ– says: Since ๐˜ข ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง follows the verb ๐˜ช๐˜ด, which follows ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, we look to the word ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ด to determine whether our verb should be singular or plural. Since ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ด is plural, our verb should be plural: ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ.
Rewrite: There ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ a lot of ways the district could address a $2.2 million deficit for next school year, and theyโ€™re looking to make the biggest moves in the near future.โ€

2. โ€œWhere'๐˜€ Sammy and Alison?โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: The subject, ๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฎ๐˜บ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, is plural, so the verb should be plural.
Rewrite: Where ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ Sammy and Alison?โ€

3. โ€œUnlike the normal exuberance after a successful mission, there ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ only quiet murmurs among the men.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— says: The first noun after the verb following ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ is ๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ด. That noun is plural, so the preceding verb should be plural.
Rewrite: Unlike the normal exuberance after a successful mission, there ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ only quiet murmurs among the men.

4. โ€œThere ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ the paternal grandparents.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: The first noun after the verb following ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ is ๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด. That noun is plural, so the preceding verb should be plural. The sentence is correct as written.

5. โ€œShe took Monica to the pier where there ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ a number of impressive hole-in-the-wall ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ sort of restaurants to choose from.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ– says: ๐˜ˆ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง is treated as plural. ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง is treated as singular.
Rewrite: She took Monica to the pier, where there ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ a number of impressive hole-in-the-wall ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ sort of restaurants to choose from.
But: She took Monica to the pier, where ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ number of hole-in-the-wall ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ sort of restaurants to choose from ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ impressive.

Let's Go Spelunking! ๐Ÿงญ๐Ÿ”ฆ

Dear Majestic Students,
Spelunking is exploring caves. Water ๐Ÿ’ฆ running underground carves out vast cave systems in many parts of the world. If the ground is composed of softer materials, water ๐Ÿ’ฆ running through the area can cause sinkholes. If the ground is formed of rock, the running water ๐Ÿ’ฆ will gradually carve out caves and caverns. You can explore caves by going through well-known caves on established paths that have been made safe for the public.
๐— ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต ๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ in Kentucky, USA, has 400 explored miles.

It's time for lesson B232. Today, Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท has a few examples of authors using incorrect words. Let's help them find the right words.

1. โ€œThe two of them were eager to check in with their aunt to see what had ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ since she had departed with Holly.โ€

Many nursery rhymes are based on historical events or beliefs. It is believed by many historians that Humpty is a reference to King Richard III. The fall described in the poem is the 1485 Battle of Bosworth Field, the final decisive battle in the War of the Roses ๐ŸŒน. King Richard III was killed in the battle, and the Plantagenet Dynasty came to an end. He was beaten by Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, who ascended to the throne of England and established the Tudor Dynasty.

It's time for lesson B231. At times, a speaker or author is aware that a pronoun should be singular, but doesn't have enough information โ„น๏ธ about the related noun to determine whether the pronoun should be masculine or feminine. Miss Jenny-Pig will help find ways to word sentences in these situations without resorting to the use of ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ/๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ or ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ.

Dear Magnanimous Students,
Wow! It's been 26 years since the first ๐˜‘๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ ๐Ÿฆ– movie ๐Ÿฟ came to our theaters. And what a movie ๐ŸŽฅ it was! This movie was based on a book ๐Ÿ“š of the same name by Michael Crichton. The book had come out over two years earlier and had been immensely popular, so many people were familiar with the story. Stephen Spielberg did an award-winning job of bringing this story to the big screen, using new computer-generated imagery techniques that were jaw-droppingly amazing. In Miss Jenny-Pig's opinion, the storyline was true to the book in all significant ways, although details varied.

It's time for lesson B230. You've probably heard that one should never ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ. That means that one should not put a word between ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ and the rest of the verb. More recently, that rule has been relaxed to indicate that a short word immediately after ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ is acceptable when the sentence seems most understandable that way

1. โ€œI did my best ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ต qualifies as a small word. By placing it directly before the word ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ต, we can get an emphasis we can't get otherwise. Miss Jenny-Pig accepts this construction.

2. โ€œShe didn't see any reason ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ straightforward with him.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ– says: Again, ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต qualifies as a small word. However, splitting the infinitive didn't allow us to place the word immediately before ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ, which is what we are trying ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต to be. Since splitting the infinitive meets no goal, let's not do it.
Rewrite: She didn't see any reason ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ straightforward with him.

3. โ€œI tried ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™ก๐™–๐™ช๐™œ๐™, but her giggle broke me, and I laughed with her.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— says: ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ต qualifies as a small word. By placing it directly before the word ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ ๐Ÿ˜‚, we can get an emphasis we can't get otherwise. Miss Jenny-Pig accepts this construction.

4. โ€œI was glad ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฒ about this over the holidays.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: Again, ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต qualifies as a small word. However, the important part of this sentence doesn't seem related to the ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ (๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ) but rather to the arguing. Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท would prefer not to split the infinitive with so large a word.
Rewrite: I grabbed my purse ๐Ÿ‘œ, making sure you slipped the hotel key ๐Ÿ—๏ธ card in so I wouldn't lock myself out, then tried ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ the room ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—น๐˜†.

๐˜‘๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ ultimately grossed over $1 billion, the first movie to do so. It also spawned huge sales of related merchandise such as toys, clothing, games, and costumes.

Dear Luminous Students,
Bicycle riding is a great summer activity. It is fun to do as a group, most people know how to do it, and it is good exercise. You can head out on a trail, set a comfortable pace, and enjoy the weather โ˜€๏ธโ›… and the scenery ๐Ÿž๏ธ while you chat with friends. Here are some Minnesota trails to look into:
๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น goes 55 paved miles from Fergus Falls to Osakis through prairie, lakelands, wetlands, farmland, and rolling forested hills.
๐—š๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น is a former Soo Line Railway which starts near downtown St. Paul and passes through woods ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ and wetlands with 18 paved miles to Stillwater. There are 10 parallel unpaved miles alongside the trail.
๐—š๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ถ-๐—š๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น will consist of 86 paved miles running along Lake Superior from Two Harbors to Grand Marias when it is completed. At this time, 36 non-contiguous miles are completed. Views of Lake Superior are stunning and flora and wildlife amaze!
๐—Ÿ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น is an old railroad grade running from Plymouth west to Thompson Lake, which is west of Cosmos. The trail is primarily crushed rock ๐Ÿชจ (limestone), but a portion is paved and a portion is mowed grass.
๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—น ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜†๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น is a paved 115 mile trail from the Crow ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ› Wing State Park to the Bemidji State Park ๐Ÿž๏ธ, running through the Chippewa National Forest ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ. It is the longest bike trail in Minnesota.
๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฎ๐—ต๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ต ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—›๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐˜€ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น is a paved 39-mile trail from Mankato through Waterville, through Sakahtah State Park to Faribault. See the best of southern Minnesotaโ€™s bluffs on a trail that is nearly level.
๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น goes from west Mankato to Rapidan, as far as 13 miles. The surface is mostly paved, with some crushed stone. The trail is famous for crossing the 80-foot high 550-foot long trestle over the LeSueur River.

It's time for lesson B229. Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท has discussed that typically to change an adjective to an adverb, you must add -ly. Here is an exception. Adverbs describing verbs that ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฎ refer to the five physical senses: smell, look, sound, taste, and feel have -ly added ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—น๐˜† ๐™ž๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง๐™— ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™›๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ ๐™ง๐™š๐™ก๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š๐˜€ ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ฅ๐™๐™ฎ๐™จ๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ก ๐™จ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™š๐™จ. Hence, if you do a bad job of using your sense of smell: ๐™”๐™ค๐™ช ๐™จ๐™ข๐™š๐™ก๐™ก ๐™—๐™–๐™™๐™ก๐™ฎ. If you give off a distasteful odor: ๐—ฌ๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐˜€๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ.

1. โ€œNow I felt rather ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—น๐˜† about running off when I got Bretโ€™s call, when Wm had just confessed.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: This does not relate to the physical sense of touch. There should be no -ly.
Rewrite: Now I felt rather ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ aboutโ€ฆ

2. โ€œNow I really feel ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: This does not relate to the physical sense of touch. There should be no -ly. The sentence is correct as written.

3. โ€œAt the very least, he'd informed his friend that he was not, in fact, dead, but he still felt terribly about how he'd pushed Solomon away.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— says: This does not relate to the physical sense of touch. There should be no -ly.
Rewrite: โ€ฆbut he still felt ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ about how he'd pushed Solomon away.
Note: The rule is not unique to the word ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ.

4. โ€œHe is ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—น๐˜† off, very ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—น๐˜†.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: This is an unusual situation in which an adverb, ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ญ๐˜บ, modifies a prepositional phrase which in this case consists of only the preposition ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง๐˜ง. Adverbs usually modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜บ is an adverb modifying another adverb. The sentence is correct as written.

Dear Loyal Students,
Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท would like to discuss a topic that is not well-documented. This is plaรงage (plah ZHAZH). Plaรงage was a recognized system outside the legal system whereby ethnic European men would enter into civil-union contracts with women of African, Native American, or mixed ancestry. The women would not be considered wives, but would be treated as such in most ways. This system was supposedly widely practiced in some French territories of what became the United States from 1769 to 1803.
Quadroon (kwa DRรœN) was a term for someone with one White parent and three Black parents. It was often used for those of any Black heritage. More shrouded in mystery and controversy than plaรงage itself are Quadroon Balls. It isn't certain how often, or even if, these occurred. Supposedly, such balls were held in New Orleans, Natchez, and other Louisiana cities so that Black Southern mothers could show off their daughters to Southern gentlemen for plaรงage contracts. Most of these black ladies would be free, rather than enslaved people.

It's time for lesson B228. Miss Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ– will discuss some spelling problems with you today.

1. โ€œEach group had one of the Muslin terrorists guarding them.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: ๐˜”๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ is a lightweight cotton and would not be much good as a terrorist ๐Ÿ˜‚. Her Ladyship admits this was probably a typographical error. Hee, hee!
The terrorists were probably a ๐— ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐˜€.

2. โ€œThis is not something to be taken lightly, and it will involve commitment to somethings that the legal system is sure to frown upon.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ด isn't even a word. Just because words are often joined (๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ and ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ) when they appear one after the other doors not mean they should always be joined. Here ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ and ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€ stand as they separate words.

3. โ€œIt wouldn't due to have Carson know he was under surveillance.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ— says: ๐˜‹๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ means ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ.
Rewrite: It wouldn't ๐—ฑ๐—ผ to have Carson know he was under surveillance.โ€

4. โ€œTheir setting up in the conference room now.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿ– says: ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ means ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ.
Rewrite: ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜†'๐—ฟ๐—ฒ setting up in the conference room now.

5. โ€œJason tried to hide his surprise ๐Ÿซข, and was about to rule out Sam Barker as a suspect, when he caught site of the items hanging on the far wall.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿฝ says: ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ means a place or location.
Rewrite: Jason tried to hide his surprise ๐Ÿซข, and was about to rule out Sam Barker as a suspect, when he caught ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜ of the items hanging on the far wall.โ€

6. โ€œWe had temporarily swopped bows a couple of times in the past.โ€
Jenny-Pig ๐Ÿท says: ๐˜š๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ is the British spelling of the American English word ๐˜€๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ. This is correct as written, if this is British English. Incorrect for American English.

While this may seem like an unusual arrangement today, remember that participation was voluntary. All participants are now deceased. The practice ended over 200 years ago.
