🚒 Fire Safety Week at Fryelands Elementary! 🔥

Our kindergarteners at Fryelands Elementary had some special visitors this week! Thank you to Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue for spending time in our kindergarten classrooms during Fire Safety Week.

Students learned the difference between tools and toys. Tools, like the ones firefighters use, are helpful and have an important job, but they are different from toys and should only be used by trained grown-ups.

One firefighter also suited up in full gear so students could see what a firefighter looks like during an emergency. The message: if there's ever a fire, don't be afraid of the firefighters or their equipment. They're there to help! Students even got to touch the gear up close.

Then it was time to see the fire truck and explore all the tools on board. 🧑‍🚒

Thank you to the crew at Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue for helping teach our students these important safety lessons. We're grateful for our community partners!

📬 Two new ballot drop boxes are now available within Monroe School District boundaries!

At the district’s request, Snohomish County Elections has added official ballot drop boxes at:

📍 Maltby Elementary
📍 Salem Woods Elementary

Both drop boxes are located inside the school parking lots, so voters will need to pull into the parking lot to access them.

Ballots for the November 3 General Election will be mailed beginning October 9. Official ballot drop boxes are open 24 hours a day through 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Happy National Walk & Roll to School Day!

Students and families at Fryelands and Frank Wagner, our district’s two walk-to-school elementary schools, started their morning walking and rolling to school with our community partners!

National Walk & Roll to School Day is celebrated across the country each fall to encourage students and families to walk, bike, or roll to school while promoting safe routes and healthy habits. Thanks to our friends at the City of Monroe, WA Parks & Recreation Department, Monroe Police Department, and Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue, it has become one of our students’ favorite fall traditions. It’s sometimes hard to tell who is having more fun: our friends in public service or our students, staff, and families! 😊

Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning and made the event so much fun. It’s a great reminder for all of us to practice safe walking and rolling habits on the way to school every day!

Monroe High School Class of 2020 graduate Efton Chism III made an INCREDIBLE one-handed touchdown catch Sunday to give the New England Patriots the late lead in their 29-26 win over the Buffalo Bills! 🏈🔥

Q: WHAT WOULD THE CAPITAL PROJECTS LEVY PAY FOR?

If approved on November 3, the approximately $49.1 million Capital Projects Levy would fund projects in four areas:

• $2.6M — Safety & security improvements
• $9.4M — Major maintenance
• $6.8M — Facility improvements
• $30.3M — Relocation of Sky Valley Education Center to an updated Wagner Center

🚌 A firsthand look at the impacts of SR 522 congestion for state legislators

Yesterday, Monroe Mayor Patsy Cudaback brought together state legislators and local leaders to hear how traffic congestion on SR 522 impacts our community and experience it firsthand.

The afternoon began at Hidden River Middle School, where representatives from Monroe School District, the City of Monroe, EvergreenHealth Monroe and Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue shared impacts on student learning and transportation, economic development, healthcare access and emergency response.

Participants then boarded a Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue bus & van for the trip from Hidden River Middle School in Maltby to Monroe during afternoon rush hour, experiencing the congestion many of our students, families and staff regularly navigate.

The event highlighted the need for construction funding for planned SR 522 improvements. WSDOT is currently moving forward with design, but construction is not yet funded.

Superintendent Shawn Woodward and School Board President Molly Barnes represented Monroe School District, joining state legislators, Monroe City Council members, Snohomish County officials, neighboring community leaders and representatives from WSDOT and other local agencies.

Thank you to Mayor Cudaback and the City of Monroe for organizing the event and providing an opportunity to share how SR 522 transportation challenges affect our students, families, staff and broader community.

🔥 Science meets fire safety at Monroe High School!

Students in Ms. Blaine’s Biotech class recently learned how fire extinguishers work, including the chemicals used to extinguish fires and how they interrupt the conditions a fire needs to keep burning.

They also learned the P.A.S.S. method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep, then watched a live demonstration before seeing Ms. Blaine put the technique into action on a controlled fire.🧯

The demonstration gave students a firsthand look at the science behind fire extinguishers, how quickly they work, and what to expect when one is used.

A pretty memorable way to see chemistry and safety in action!
