Upward Bound Students please join us for tutoring on Thursday, February 22nd, between 2:15-4:30 in room B-221, as we celebrate TRIO Day with frosted cookies and pop. Teachers and staff will also receive bakery made treats that will be in the mail room, located behind the main office for your enjoyment, the morning of Friday, February 23rd. The reason we celebrate Trio Day at Upward Bound is because Upward Bound was one of the original Trio Programs created during the 1960’s, “war on poverty”. Over the decades, Trio programs have supported millions of disadvantaged students get accepted into college and be the first in their family to earn a four year college degree!

Seniors,

This Tuesday, the Department of Education announced that due to changes being made to the FAFSA form, as well as the formulas used to calculate student aid, colleges/universities will not start receiving students’ financial aid data until the first half of March. This is more than a month later than expected. What this means for you is that there will be a delay in hearing how much you will receive from colleges/universities, which may delay your decision about where to enroll next year. If there is any good news here, it's that everyone will be in the same boat, so don't panic. The colleges are also aware of this, obviously, so they will have to adjust and be flexible with everyone on deadlines and timelines. Please do not take this as an opportunity to further delay completing the FAFSA, if you have not already done so, you should still complete it ASAP. The original deadline I put out was today for MHS UB Seniors.

For more information, please follow the link below for an article posted on CNN today:

Colleges won’t start receiving students’ financial aid data from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA, until the first half of March – more than a month later than expected.

On Friday, six MHS Upward Bound students, who have an interest in Science, Engineering, and/or emerging technologies, attended Eastern Michigan University’s, Digital Divas Program. Students were able to choose two different hour long sessions from a menu of options, including: a tour of EMU’s campus, a session centered around cyber security technologies, a session centered around virtual reality, a session centered on programming, and a handful of other STEM related sessions. Our students came away from their experience very impressed with Eastern Michigan University’s commitment to improving their existing science/engineering programs, while actively engaging young women through facilitating programming such as Digital Divas, with the hope to get more women into STEM based careers.
