KIRPC Head Start

KIRPC Head Start KIRPC HEAD START is a preschool that serves 116 children/families in Newton Jasper and Pulaski County Head Start began in 1965.

KIRPC Head Start initiated in 1997. The federally funded program is designed to foster healthy development in low-income children. KIRPC delivers a range of services, responsive and appropriate to each child and family’s heritage and experience that encompass all aspects of a child’s development and learning. Every program must meet the Federal Head Start Performance Standards. KIRPC is a 9 month program, August to May, following the public school calendar as much as possible. KIRPC teachers hold an Associate’s Degree, or higher, in Early Childhood Education. Teacher assistants hold a CDA or are working towards their CDA currently. All staff are trained annually in CPR/First Aid, child abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, medication administration, and several other topics. School Readiness and Family Engagement is the focus of the program. Data days occur 3 times annually where child and family progress is analyzed and improvement goals are set for individual children, staff, classes, and for the whole program.

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month!
This month is a great time to learn about the importance of healthy vision for our children.

At Head Start, we must complete an evidence-based vision screening within 45 calendar days of a child’s first day of attendance. Early screenings can help identify vision concerns and connect children with the support they need.

KIRPC Head Start partners with local Lion's Clubs to complete vision screenings onsite. After reviewing the results, we share them with each child's family.

Parents and caregivers can also watch for common signs of vision trouble, including:

👓 Squinting, tilting the head, or covering one eye
📚 Holding books too close or sitting very close to the TV
👀 Frequent eye rubbing or complaints of headaches
📝 Having a short attention span during close-up activities

If you notice any of these signs, talk with your child’s healthcare provider or eye care professional.

The first day of KIRPC Head Start Preschool for the 2026–2027 school year is just around the corner! We can’t wait to welcome our Head Start children and families back for another year filled with learning, laughter, friendships, discovery, and BIG growth!

Classrooms are getting prepared.
Teachers are excited.
And our little learners are getting ready to grow!
This year, we’ll explore new ideas, try new things, build confidence, make memories, and celebrate every step along the way.
