The statute of limitations for the most serious type of sexual assault cases can differ significantly for American adults depending on what state they live in, according to 2026 data from the R**e, Abuse & In**st National Network, a nonprofit that tracks the issue.

NBC News verified and analyzed the data and found dramatic differences in how states handle the cases.

Police wanted to see what female runners were dealing with in public.

So they sent officers out to experience it themselves.

In 2025, Surrey Police launched an operation called Jog On, using plainclothes female officers dressed in running gear to patrol areas where women had reported harassment.

Specialist police teams stayed nearby, ready to intervene if the runners were targeted.

It did not take long.

Inspector Jon Vale said one officer was honked at within 10 minutes. About 30 seconds later, another vehicle slowed down, beeped and made gestures toward the runners.

During one patrol observed by LBC, two officers were targeted within minutes.

Police said not every incident crossed the threshold for arrest. Some people were stopped and spoken to about their behaviour, while more serious or repeat offending could lead to criminal action.

Across Surrey Police operations targeting violence against women and girls that month, including the jogging patrols, 18 arrests were recorded for offences including harassment, sexual assault and theft.

The force said the tactic was intended both to catch offenders and to intervene before behaviour escalated.

South African student Bohlale Mphahlele developed the “Alerting Earpiece” while studying at SJ van der Merwe Technical High School in Limpopo. When activated, the discreet wearable can capture a photo, share the user’s location, and send an emergency alert to connected contacts. Her safety-focused invention later received recognition at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

UPDATE:

The individual found deceased Monday morning near the Alma Mater statue has been identified as 29-year-old Alex C. Rodriguez. Rodriguez was not affiliated with the University of Illinois.

Preliminary information indicates there was no foul play involved, and the death is believed to be accidental. There is no ongoing threat to the campus community.

UIPD and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding Rodriguez’s death.
