Seventy-four years after a Pan Am flight crashed into the water off Puerto Rico, killing 52 people and prompting sweeping reforms including preflight passenger safety briefings, an aviation search team has found the wreckage sitting on the ocean floor.

Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, in partnership with Deep Sea Vision, an Eco Minerals Company, and Discovery Channel’s "Expedition Unknown," last month found the wreckage of the Pan Am “Clipper Endeavor." https://cnn.it/3T3n6ds

2003: During a balcony porch party at an apartment building at 713 W. Wrightwood Ave. in Lincoln Park, a third-floor porch holding partygoers gave way, caving onto the second-floor porch below and barreling down to the ground floor. Thirteen people died and more than 50 were injured at the site just steps away from DePaul University.

Although the city at first blamed overcrowding for the incident, it later charged that the porch on the Wrightwood building was bigger than code allowed and constructed improperly and without permits. Building inspectors, however, never cited those violations before the collapse.

In the aftermath of the collapse, victims’ families and injured survivors filed lawsuits against the property owner, manager, porch contractor and the city, the last of which a state appellate court ruled could not be held liable. The suits were ultimately settled with the property’s insurance companies for a total of $16.6 million.

The city also fined the property owner $108,000 and the porch contractor $25,000. It clarified and strengthened the building code and launched inspection sweeps. Officials created a 311 service request code for porch complaints and enacted a policy to inspect porches year-round rather than seasonally. (Chicago Tribune)

After 16 years, the Joyful Heart’s End the Backlog Campaign has achieved what once felt impossible: all 50 states, with Maine becoming the 50th and final state, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico have enacted at least one pillar of r**e kit reform in a testament to the power of sustained, survivor-centered advocacy, led by actress Mariska Hargitay. Hargitay plays the iconic Captain Olivia Benson on the NBC series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the longest-running primetime drama character in television history. Currently in season 27, she also serves as the series's executive producer and director.

At the heart of their advocacy work is the “End the Backlog” campaign, which aims to eliminate the backlog of hundreds of thousands of untested r**e kits sitting in storage across America, so that survivors can get the closure they deserve.

“This did not happen overnight. It happened because survivors spoke their truth. It happened because advocates refused to let urgency become complacency. This moment is a promise that the system can and will be transformed into a source of light, not darkness. To the survivors who have carried this cause in their hearts: this milestone belongs to you. We are far from done, but how glorious to take this moment to honor how far we have come together.”
