Irving Grade School

Irving Grade School Moline School District # 40 Irving was originally known as Ward 2 School when it was built in 1881-82 near the base of the 12th Street hill at 7th Avenue.

It was renamed IRVING SCHOOL in 1894, presumably for author WASHINGTON IRVING. The building was closed as a school in February 1970 and merged into a new Lincoln-Irving School building at the site of the old Lincoln School. On November 11, 1980, Irving was destroyed in a spectacular fire. During the 1970's, the vacant school had been used by the Moline Jaycees for their Halloween Haunted House eve

nts. After the 1980 fire, the Irving School bell was saved by the building owner and donated to the Moline School District. Today the bell is displayed on 16th Avenue in front of the Lincoln-Irivng School. PRINCIPAL IRENE McCREA RESUME: Attended DeKalb and Macomb Teacher Colleges and graduated in 1927; Post Graduate work at University of Colorado, WIST College Extension, St. Ambrose and Northwestern University; 1927-52: 1st and 2nd grade teacher at William Carr Elementary; 1952-54: Director of Reading at Allendale (Moline School District Administration); 1954-55: Director of Elementary Education at Allendale; 1955-57: Principal at Butterwork Elementary; 1957-70: Principal at Irving Elementary; RETIRED on May 29, 1970.

These are the shoes that were popular in the mid to late 1960’s that every grade school boy at Irving needed to run faster; several of us had them when we ran relays on the playground behind the school.
