✨SAE Spotlight✨

Shaylee Gubrud will round out our summer SAE spotlights with her swine production SAE. Shaylee and her pig “Rubble” have hit the show string this summer and learned a lot along the way! This is Shaylee’s first year of her SAE and while it was lots of fun it also came with its challenges including learning how to manage her pig, continue to meet weight goals, and train for the show pen. It’s safe to say that Shaylee is hooked on pigs now! Great work this summer, Shaylee!

✨SAE Spotlight✨

Keenan Lakefield has a swine production SAE where he raises show market hogs and shows them in open, 4-H/FFA and point shows across ND as well as raising feeder hogs.

Keenan’s favorite part of his SAE is watching the pigs grow and improve. The biggest lesson he has learned this year is the importance of keeping good record on the AET especially weights to show a progression of growth! Great work on your first year of your SAE, Keenan!

✨SAE Spotlight✨

Taryn Rice has a food products and processing SAE where she bakes and sells Oreo cookies. Taryn’s favorite part of her SAE is being able to bake for people. She loves selling cookies to community members and seeing them smile when they get their product! The biggest thing Taryn has learned in her SAE is to always double check the ingredients so you don’t mess up the cookies and always remember to watch what you put in the oven so nothing burns!

Congratulations to Karlee Lakefield on her bronze award in the national agriscience fair contest.

Karlee’s agriscience project evaluated the influences of FFA participation in North Dakota. Karlee surveyed students in grades 5-12 across the state to collect responses. Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey!

Congratulations to Hudson Fyllesvold who earning a bronze rating in the national agriscience fair contest.

Hudson’s agriscience project evaluated the effect of NPK ratios on tomato plant growth. A huge thank you to Hefty for providing the fertilizer for the research trial!

Congratulations Hudson!!

✨SAE Spotlight✨

Karlee Lakefield has a Swine Production SAE where she purchases and shows pigs, as well as raising feeder pigs. She selects and purchases her show pigs from local producers in the spring and prepares them for summer shows. Karlee travels across the state to show pigs competitively through 4-H, FFA, and the NDJPSA at both county and state levels. Karlee is responsible for the feeding, training, grooming, and record keeping of all her pigs. Karlee and her brother Keenan also raise 10 feeder pigs for butcher. Together, they grind and mix their own feed and care daily for the pigs. Once the pigs are at butcher weight, they assist with the butchering process. They will sell the products to local consumers.

Karlee’s favorite part of her SAE is the connections and friendships it has brought me. Through showing, she has met some of my best friends and connected with some amazing people. She is able to spend valuable time with her family and learn life skills with it all.

The biggest lesson Karlee has learned this year is that time is extremely valuable. Pigs are fast-growing animals, so within a week they can change a lot! Learn to put the work in if you want something! Never take the opportunities given to you for granted!

✨SAE Spotlight✨

Reese Buynak had a Crop Production Placement SAE where he works for Buynak Farms. Throughout the summer Reese can be found fixing equipment, helping operate equipment, making hay, and helping with all aspects of the operation from planting to harvest.

Reese’s favorite part of his SAE is being able to run equipment. Reese said that this year the biggest lesson he has learned in his SAE this year is that it’s critical to apply certain fungicides and nutrients to crops otherwise they won’t work properly and crops won’t grow to their full potential.
