The MJC Speech and Debate team is a competitive co-curricular team at Modesto Junior College. Any current MJC student can enroll in COMM 105 to join the team.

About the Team
Welcome! Speech and debate is an activity focused on developing research skills, polishing your speaking style, and thinking on your feet. Many students who participate find themselves intellectually invigorated and often get scholarship and career opportunities. Speech & Debate won big this weekend, taking 2nd Place Sweepstakes at the Mustang Invitational; 3rd Place Sweepstakes at the Paul Winters Invitational; and 2nd Place β€œSwing” Sweepstakes when both days of competition were combined. Students also took home a wealth of individual awards. Thank you to and for hosting an awesome weekend. Congrats to all the other schools who made this a fun and rigorous competition.

Two speech and debate students won awards in the Online Asynchronous Tournament #2, a competition that draws speakers from across the country. Congrats to Sabrina Clendenin and Crowley Crump, two of the only Community College students in their semi-final and final rounds!

The Speech and Debate team traveled to Santa Rosa, CA on October 19, 2025 for a full day of platform speeches, limited preparation, oral interpretation, and debate competition. Ten students represented the college including Belle Beglinger, Dre Cajigas, Sabrina Clendenin, Diarah Salcedo Lopez, Jennifer Magdaleno Garcia, Cec Mundo, JoAnna Noon, Celeste Randolph, Lucas Santiago, and Tyler Wedel.
Results: MJC took the 4th Place Sweepstakes award. In individual events, Beglinger took 6th in After Dinner Speaking. Clendenin earned 6th in Persuasive Speaking, 5th in Informative Speaking, and 7th in Impromptu Speaking. Noon won 7th in Informative Speaking. Mundo won 2nd in Persuasive Speaking and 4th in Communication Analysis. In IPDA Debate, Cajigas took Gold; Randolph earned Silver; and Wedel earned Silver. Thank you for hosting an awesome tournament!

The Speech and Debate team traveled to San Francisco for the Golden Gate Season Opener. Ten students represented the college including Belle Beglinger, Sabrina Clendenin, Crowley Crump, Averie Higlesias, Diarah Salcedo Lopez, JoAnna Noon, Cec Mundo, Sharon Tokpan, Celeste Randolph, and Tyler Wedel.
Results from Day 1: Cec Mundo earn 1st in Impromptu, 3rd in Communication Analysis, and 5th in Persuasive Speaking. Sabrina Clendenin and Belle Beglinger were 7th in Duo Interpretation. Clendenin also earned 3rd in Persuasive Speaking. Beglinger also earned 4th in After Dinner Speaking and 2nd in SPAR Debate.
Results from Day 2: In Persuasive Speaking, Sabrina Clendenin took 1st and Cec Mundo earned a Finalist award. Belle Beglinger and Clendenin took a Finalist award in Duo Interpretation. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Crowley Crump earned Silver. In IPDA Debate, Tyler Wedel earned Gold, Celeste Randolph earned Silver, and Diarah Salcedo Lopez earned Bronze.
