We at cta agree 100% that practice is what ultimately makes you better. You can’t replace putting in the hours and doing it over and over. But as the owner of California Tint Academy, I also see every day how much of a difference proper training can make, especially for someone just starting out.
A good beginner course can be a huge jump start. Instead of spending months trying to figure everything out through trial and error, you have an experienced tinter right there who can answer questions in real time, show you the fundamentals, correct mistakes, and explain why something is happening.
And it shouldn’t stop when the class ends. One of the things I believe is important is having a school that continues to support its students afterward. If someone finishes training and is still struggling with something, they should have somewhere they can turn for help. Being able to come back for additional guidance gives a beginner a lot of peace of mind.
There’s also advanced training. For example, there are tinters who understand the basics but still struggle with heat-shrinking difficult windows, certain curves, techniques and problem solving. That’s where hands on instruction from someone experienced can really help.
I also believe a tint school should teach more than just how to install film. If you’re serious about making this a career or starting your own business, understanding the business side is extremely important licensing, LLCs, funding resources, sales, finding a shop to work for, and understanding what it takes to operate legitimately.
We also believe students should understand both hand cutting and computer cutting, including how plotters and film systems fit into a professional operation.
So yes, you absolutely have to practice. School isn’t going to make you great overnight. But the right training program can give you the foundation, shorten the learning curve, provide hands on experience, and give you resources and support that are difficult to get completely on your own.
That’s the approach we take at California Tint Academy not just teaching someone how to tint, but helping set them up with the knowledge and resources to continue improving after they leave the classroom.
