AROM (artificial rupture of membranes) is a common intervention used during labor to intentionally break the amniotic sac.

Before consenting, here are a few questions you can ask your provider:

• Why are you recommending AROM right now?
• What does my current cervical exam show, and is it favorable for breaking my water?
• What are the potential benefits and risks?
• How might this affect my pain or pain-management options?
• Are additional interventions, such as Pitocin, more likely to be recommended afterward?
• Are there alternatives we can try first?
• What happens if I choose to wait?

Why do these questions matter?

Because informed consent is more than simply saying “yes.” It means understanding why an intervention is being recommended, its risks and benefits, possible alternatives, and knowing you have the option to decline or delay an intervention.

Ask questions. Know your options. Feel confident in your decisions. 🤍
