Project Outreach Causey Middle School

WOW! Today we put a close on our first year of Project Outreach at Causey with a donut social. Project Outreach and their buddies got to just hang out and be middles schoolers. There was no labels today just friendships, laughter, love, and a few tears.

The growth that has occurred this year on our campus is beyond anything we could have imagined and it is because of these individuals. Many see “unlikely friendships” and while that may be true we see a group of students that understand that a person is so much more than a single label. Let’s stop seeing disabilities and start seeing exceptionality, because everyone of theses individuals are exceptional.

Project Outreach was in full Valentines mode this Friday. Memebers of PO and their friends started their day by delivering Valentines cards that they made to staff on campus. They ended their day with a Valentine party and exchanging Valentines with each other.

We are truly blessed to have an amazing feeder pattern. This week we celebrated Shooting 2 Change.

On Wednesday Mrs. Williams and one of Causey’s members Harmony Dixon had the privilege of participating in an interview at Baker High School for Fox 10. “It was fun to see what I will be doing next year and getting to know others in the PO community,” stated Harmony.

Thursday, Baker hosted their first Shooting 2 Change Autism Awareness Game. Baker, Causey, and Dawes Special Olympics teams and Project Outreach were recognized. The support from the community was amazing.

Today Student Council hosted a Christmas Party for our Tiger Buddies. Project Outreach members were able to get some quality time with their buddies and enjoy some great snacks.

Week of Change Day 4: Students started their day off by watching the most heartfelt interviews between 4 of our Project Outreach members and their Tiger Buddies.

Then we ended the day by hosting a pep rally for our Special Olympics Super Tigers! We had a special performance by our Dream Team and Cheerleaders. Along with our Music Enrichment Class playing Hukuna Matata with boomwackers. We focused on turning negative words that are often associated with those who are different then us such as avoidance, pity, judgment, exclusion, and limitations then replacing them by getting to know them and who they are beyond their disability. We want to focus on their kindness, outgoingness, and their sense of humor. A bonus we raised aroubd $1,000.

Week of Change : Day 2 and 3

On day 2 students created their own awareness ribbon to show their acceptance and willingness to learn about different disabilities. Some of the disablities that were represented were Autism , Tourettes, Down Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Dyslexia, ADHD, Hearing Impairment, and Cerebral Palsy.

On day 3 students took a pledge and signed their class pledge card after discussing what it meant to take this pledge. We are making each moment count. Radical inclusion is it is a compilation of many moments consistently choosing acceptance, awareness, and the building of relationships.

Week of Change - Day 1

Project Outreach kicked off our first day of Week of Change. Students learned about the purpose of Week of Change during their Enrichment periods. Teachers introduced vocabulary that often is associated with the interactions that we have with our peers that are disabled or differently-abled from us. Students were able to discuss what the pathway to radical inclusion could look like through using Inclusion Tiles . They were also able see what it looks like through two boys that have formed an authentic friendship no matter their differences.

Students will continue to learn throughout the week that the time we take to learn about ourselves and others is truly “More Than A Moment”. It is a series of moments that allows us to create relationships and friendships that truly make us, “Changed for Good”.

On Friday, Project Outreach’s Harper Young recieved 7th grade girl Tiger of the Week. Our Tiger Buddy Kane received 7th grade boy Tiger of the Week and Addi received 8th grade girl. Mrs. Williams’ and Mrs. Morris are so proud of all three.
