The Oyster Trail is a scavenger hunt through Coastal Alabama. Grab a map, follow the Trail (26 stops), explore oysters, the ecosystem and our communities.
The Oyster Trail is a project introduced by the Mobile Bay Oyster Gardening Program and is an entertaining, educational and public art treasure hunt throughout Coastal Alabama. The project was created in order to raise awareness of the importance of oysters in restoring Mobile Bay, as well as boosting the economy. Though these are (were?) a part of a bottom trial, they serve as a great reminder of how important it is to keep your oysters OFF the bottom and away from pilings. These spent 7 days on the bottom and were nearly all killed by predators. Protect those baby oysters by keeping them about a foot off the bottom and between pilings.

It’s beginning to look a lot like spawning season! Oyster Gardening 2023 is upon us. Recycled oyster shells heading to the hatchery where they will begin their next chapter as settling space for millions of oyster larvae destined for planting on Alabama oyster reefs. Our Gardeners provide a safe nursery environment for these future spat to grow a bit and have a better survival rate benefiting the bay and those who live, work, and play in this critical space.

Oyster Gardening 2021 has begun in Little Lagoon. Thanks to Auburn University Shellfish Lab for setting again this year and the Oyster Shell Recycling Program managed by Alabama Coastal Foundation! The spat will return to the reefs at the end of the year and continue their work. Tumble Time for the 2021 gardening season. These shells were recycled from the AL Oyster Shell Recycling program led by Alabama Coastal Foundation. Once clean of sand, they will be counted, bagged and set with this year's crop of baby oysters (spat) by the Auburn University Shellfish Lab before they make their way to Gardener's piers.
