We love to see our alumni Dragons stay connected and give back to the school however they can!🐉📚

Wyatt Aiken, ASMS Class of 2024, is a junior at Yale University studying plant and fungus ecology while learning Portuguese. He spent this past summer in the Brazilian Amazon Field Ecology Station assisting with multiple research projects on understanding soil fungi, river flows, and plant diversity. 🌿 He then found time to visit his old stomping grounds at ASMS and speak with our Biology Fundementals class about the great debates in science, which got students thinking about the importance of debate, disagreement, and criticism in the scientific process! 🔬

It's amazing to see what our alums are up to and how they take the time to help current Dragons on their journeys. 👏

🙌 A prime example of how the ASMS Research Fellows Program provides amazing research opportunities for our students!

🌱ASMS Research Fellows presented their work at the University of South Alabama for the workshop "From Amazonia to the Gulf Coast: A Brazil-U.S. Workshop on Climate Resilience, Environmental Research and Empowering the Next Generation of Scientists."

🐉 ASMS students E.J. Wilkie, Elijah Moon, Albery Milliken- Young, Aina Khristoforova, Leo Xu and Evan Wu worked through the summer to learn new research techniques utilizing Geographic Information Systems software applied to environmental topics. Under the supervision of USA Graduate Student Erin Koster and ASMS professor Dr. Natalie Ortell, these students carried out their research and presented it to scientists from all over the world.🌎

How amazing is that?! We are so proud of each of you!!

Yes, we are still highlighting our summer activities because they are SO AWESOME!!!🤩

🩺 ASMS Senior Eden Fillingim participated in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s PRISM program: the Pre-College Research Internship for Scholarship and Mentoring. This program gives high school juniors interested in medicine a hands-on introduction to medical research and surgical careers. Eden is one of only two ASMS students who have participated in the program before!

🐉 We are so proud and can’t wait to see what else the future holds for Eden!

Before we welcomed our students back to campus, we spent a lot of time prepping behind the scenes!🤩 It means so much to have faculty and staff who are truly dedicated to the success of our students and invested in the future of our school. Raise your hand if you’re ready for a GREAT year at ASMS!!🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

From the waters of Dauphin Island to the skies above Philadelphia, ASMS senior Alex McElroy had a busy summer! 🌊🔭✨

🥼Alex worked as a paid intern in Dr. Jeffery Krause’s lab at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, where she assisted graduate students with their research while continuing to gather data for her own research project.

“By working directly with grad students and Dr. Krause, I’ve gotten a close-up view into the science world, met some awesome, smart people, and gained experience in the field I’m interested in.”

🌟 Alex then took a short break to explore the science of stars and attend the Astronomical Techniques Research Academy at the University of Pennsylvania. The program focused on astronomy and astronomical research techniques. Alex built telescopes, observed and photographed the sky, and used Python coding to analyze data collected during observing sessions.

“In addition to broadening my academic horizons, I also got to explore Philadelphia and meet awesome professors and like-minded students.”

🐉 We love highlighting the opportunities our students take to explore the fields they’re passionate about!

➡️ Check out our story to see some of Alex's time lapse videos of her work at the DISL!
