: Earlier this year, first-semester nursing student Luke Thomas was awarded a $2,500 Alpha Sigma Lambda scholarship from Alpha Sigma Lambda, the oldest and largest chapter-based honor society for full and part-time students. Its purpose is to provide an association which recognizes academically outstanding adult and non-traditional students in higher education. He found out about the scholarship through a conversation with Bob Charlebois, director of the Office of Adult Learner Services.

“He (Bob) was the reason I applied. He reached out personally and asked, ‘Hey, I’ve got this scholarship. I think you’d be perfect for it.’ He’s very hands-on with all the adult learners which I think was extremely impressive because I had never seen that in any other society,” Luke said.

Prior to starting at South in 2020, Luke spent two years teaching English in Brazil with Central Bible College. He spent much of his life living in Missouri but calls Mobile his home. When he is not studying for nursing school, Luke spends much of his time working two local jobs at a sandwich shop and cabinet shop. He is no stranger to hard work and has had 17 jobs since taking his first as a paperboy when he was 11 years old.
