A is for Apple! 🍎🍏

Our PreK4 students put their taste buds to the test during A Week with a little apple taste testing! They sampled three different kinds of apples, chose their favorites, and then charted the class results to see which variety came out on top.

It may look like a tasty snack, but our little Mustangs were practicing so many important early learning skills along the way, including comparing, making choices, collecting data, counting, and reading a simple graph. The best learning is often the kind that feels like fun!

And apparently, the people of PreK4 have some very strong apple opinions. 😂🍎

Beep, beep! Here comes the Bookmobile! 🚌📚

We love welcoming the Mobile Public Library Bookmobile to St. Mary’s! Bringing the library right to our campus gives our students even more opportunities to explore new books, discover new interests, and grow their love of reading.

Building great readers, one bead at a time! 📚💙🤍

Our third graders have the opportunity to earn a special Book Bead each time they score an 80 or above on an AR quiz for a chapter book, and these readers earned their very first beads yesterday!

It is a fun way to celebrate not only reading, but also comprehension, perseverance, and the accomplishment that comes from finishing a whole chapter book. We have a feeling those bead collections are going to be growing quickly this year!

Why recess? Because kids need it! 💙🤍

At St. Mary’s, recess does not disappear just because students get older. Research shows that movement, fresh air, play, and time with peers can improve attention, concentration, memory, and classroom behavior while also supporting physical, social, and emotional development. ALL of our students have a recess break daily!

There is plenty of learning happening on the playground too. Unstructured play gives students opportunities to problem solve, communicate, handle disagreements, practice self regulation, include others, and navigate friendships independently. Those skills matter just as much at 13 as they do at 5.

So when you see our Mustangs running, playing, laughing, or simply sitting and talking with friends, know that we see value in that time too.

At St. Mary’s, educating the whole child sometimes means giving a growing brain exactly what it needs: a break! ☀️💙

Our 4th graders kicked off the school year with a little Freckle Juice fun! 📚🍋💙🤍

After reading Judy Blume’s Freckle Juice, students brought the story to life by making their very own batch of Freckle Juice. Activities like this turn a book into an experience, building excitement around literature while giving students a fun way to connect with what they are reading.

Will it actually give them freckles? We’ll have to check back on Monday. 😉 A pretty fun way to start a new year of reading and learning in 4th grade!

Mustangs lead the way! 🏈💙🤍

Last night, McT Football took home the victory over Foley High School, and there was plenty of Mustang pride represented on the field! Four of the five team captains are St. Mary’s Mustangs, including Kaden Thrash and Ladarien Miller. Our current St. Mary’s second graders, Ty and Elliot, had the special opportunity to walk onto the field alongside them!

Our youngest students getting to stand beside former Mustangs who have grown into leaders and athletes is exactly what community is all about.

We love watching the foundation built at St. Mary’s continue long after our students leave our halls, while the next generation gets to look up to those who came before them.

Our kindergarteners had their very first introduction to Mrs. Arensberg’s SEL class this week, and it is safe to say they LOVED discovering all of the tools waiting for them!

Students met our Slumberkins, special SEL tools we will use throughout the year to help make big concepts more concrete for little learners. Through stories, conversations, and practice, students will learn strategies for regulating emotions, respecting personal space and boundaries, using our hands to help instead of hurt, communicating feelings, solving problems, and caring for one another.

They also got their first look at some of Mrs. Arensberg’s calming and regulation tools, but this is only the beginning. At St. Mary’s, SEL and character development are intentionally taught each week, giving our students a toolbox of strategies they can continue building from kindergarten all the way through graduation.

Learning how to read, write, and solve problems matters, but so does learning how to be a good friend, manage big feelings, make responsible choices, and become the kind of person God calls us to be.
