A huge CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Spencer-Westlawn Elementary School's 1st grade teacher Ms. Chantaye Scott. She was the recipient of WKRG News 5's Golden Apple Award. The entire school cheered for Ms. Scott as she paraded down the hallway. Phenomenal job!

Ms. Beech's second grade students worked on procedures for small group and workshop stations. AR, Amira, teacher table, word work, and desk work.

Third grade students enjoyed Fun Friday during after school tutoring. Ms. Mabien and Ms. Colston facilitated Vowel and Ryhming BINGO. Students reviewed vowel patterns and vowel teams when identifying rhyming pairs.

After School Reading Tutoring teachers are using the Teacher Created Materials (TCM) program to support student literacy skills.

After School Tutoring in 3rd Grade consisted of students reviewing ORC High Frequency Words and engaging in 3 different activities.
1. They played SHAKE IT UP.. students had to find the correct word from their HFW envelope. We played SHAKE IT music 🎶 while they shook their envelopes!
2. They also played LETS BUILD IT! Students had to build HFW with letters.
3. Students practiced writing ✍🏽 the words.

Teachers in 3rd grade began their Open Court reading lessons by launching the theme “Respect”. Ms. Colston asked her students, “What does respect mean to you”? Students wrote their answers on sticky notes and placed them on the class concept board. Students also made up their own words to complete the spelling patterns for the three long vowel focus cards A, I, and O.

Ms. Colston’s class did a team building activity using a puzzle 🧩. Students worked together to assemble the puzzles. The students had an awesome time with this activity.

Outstanding job! Ms. Colston was awarded her official certificate for being 1-1 certified with MCPSS. Dr. Chappell brought the certificate today to Ms. Colston!

These teachers in 3rd grade are Aiming for Excellence! They are on FIRE with their implementation of Open Court Reading!

Ms. Beech’s class is highly engaged while she is implementing her lesson. Students at Spencer-Westlawn are "Aiming for Excellence" with the new Open Court Reading program. Students are already working in their dictation journals."

After the first day of school was complete, Principal Davis had dinner prepared and ready to go for the teachers!

Our phenomenal leader Ms. Tivella Davis won the prize for the “Most Buy-In” at the Principals’ Retreat in Birmingham, AL.

21st Century Summer Camp students took a trip to the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium in New Orleans, Louisiana. While in New Orleans they also took a trip to Dave & Busters.

Kindergarten students in the Summer Literacy Camp were engaged in making some amazing crafts related to the countries we visited: Mexico, Africa, and China.

K-1 classes enjoyed engaging STEM activities. The activities included learning about volcanic eruptions and how the gases are the driving force behind the eruption. Students also learned how to make catapults using popsicle sticks.

The 21st century students took a field trip to the Global Wildlife Center in Folsom, Louisiana.

Ms. Chambers literacy camp students are doing a pizza math activity during the math block.

What an awesome week to be a kid at Spencer-Westlawn Elementary School! Students were engaged in well-planned lessons that were centered around African culture, traditions, animals, and customs.

As part of Numercy Camp students completed a gallery walk where they critiqued each other's budget and floor plans for the Stars and Stripes bowling alley.

A special thanks goes out to to our partners in education Taco Mama. This popular restaurant donated chips and salsa to the students on last week during the Summer Literacy Camp. Our camp theme was "A Taste of Mexico. Delicioso!

We are on FIRE at the Spencer-Westlawn Elementary School Summer Literacy Camp! Each day 2 students from each class are nominated for "being on fire". Their names are entered into a raffle to win a prize for their hard work! These students were caught doing an outstanding job during instructional time and were rewarded at the end of the day!

Buzz, Buzz, Buzz! Students in Ms. Colston's class listened to the reading of the African folktale "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears". Ms. Hurd taught an awesome math lesson and a STEM lesson that was engaging for the students.
