Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t a new strategy.

Sometimes it’s staying.

Ministry leadership will inevitably bring seasons of frustration, uncertainty, conflict, and questions about whether it would be easier to move on.

And sometimes moving on is the right decision.

But there are also problems that don’t need an exit, they need endurance.

Time has a way of doing work that urgency can’t. Trust can be rebuilt. Relationships can deepen. Perspective can change. Difficult seasons can pass. And problems that once felt impossible can look very different when leaders and ministry teams are willing to keep showing up and doing the work.

There can be tremendous value in simply staying long enough to see what faithfulness produces.

In this clip from Ministry & Podcast, Mike and Chris discuss the value of persistence and endurance, and how sometimes the unexpected remedy for a difficult season is staying through it.

Not ignoring problems.
Not resisting necessary change.
Not staying at any cost.

But knowing the difference between a season you need to leave and a season you need to endure.

Because sometimes, the thing that changes a ministry isn’t leaving the difficult season behind.

It’s staying long enough to grow through it.

What happens when the person everyone looks to for strength is walking through tragedy, too?

Ministry doesn’t make us immune to grief, crisis, or loss. Sometimes tragedy enters the lives of the people we serve. Sometimes it enters our own.

And in those moments, the question becomes: "How do we lead faithfully when life hurts?"

On Wednesday, October 7, CBU’s Russell School of Ministry will welcome "Dr. E. LeRoy Lawson" for two honest and deeply relevant conversations about leading through tragedy.

Dr. Lawson brings more than six decades of experience as a pastor, professor, university president, author, and consultant. He also brings something that can’t be learned from a résumé alone: personal experience with profound loss.

His 2023 book, "Son, We Need to Talk: Coping with My Son’s Su***de", reflects on the deeply personal experience of losing his son.

What does ministry look like when you can’t afford to draw attention to yourself?

While living in Mecca and seeking opportunities to introduce people to Jesus, Mark knew that the wrong interaction could have serious consequences.

There were skeptics. People who questioned his motives. People who might try to expose him as a fraud, or even a spy.

So how do you build genuine relationships when you’re constantly weighing trust against risk?

For Mark, persecution wasn’t an abstract idea. He experienced arrest firsthand, and had to wrestle with the reality that others serving alongside him had paid an even greater price.

How do you process that?

How do you think about faithfulness when you’ve seen fellow missionaries suffer, even die, for their calling?

In this conversation, Mark reflects on arrest, persecution, martyrdom, and the questions that emerge when following Christ carries consequences you can no longer discuss only in theory.
