STEAM Special with Mrs. Colglazier Hatfield and Burris STEAM specials page

07/29/2026

As some of you might have already heard, I will be teaching fourth grade at Burris this year. Once they find someone to take over STEAM, I will be transferring this page over to them. I truly loved all the fun we had last year in STEAM and seeing how much my students learned. Teaching specials is unique in the fact that all of the students become “our students”, and I will definitely miss that, but I am also excited for my next chapter. Thank you so much to everyone who encouraged creative thinking in your students, provided supplies, shared ideas for fun projects, and allowed your students to continue to explore, create, and experiment at home. It was greatly appreciated!

Students at both schools had fun exploring pollination last week. We talked about what characteristics make something an effective pollinator, and then they got to experiment with their own pollinators.

Busy bees collecting pollen. 🐝 We’re learning about pollinators this week, and they’re making bees to collect “pollen” (Kool-Aid powder). If their bee is an effective pollinator, they have all three colors on their flower when I spray it with water.

Tuesday students at Burris will be learning about worms next week, so this week we explored pollinators and why they’re important. They were tasked with creating a pollinator that would pick up the “pollen” from one flower and deposit it on the other flower. They were all successful in creating an effective pollinator. 🙂

We’re attempting to build and race some balloon powered Lego cars at Burris this week. It’s a lot more challenging than I expected it to be, and of course we’ve had the occasional flying or popped balloon, but it’s also lots of fun. This was our fastest car of the day.
