Woke to the news that the Atlantic Monthly listed Perma Red as one of the Great American Novels. Of 136 titles, my teacher, Jim Welch's Winter in the Blood made the list, too. Perma Red was such a challenging book to write and over so many years of frustrations and disappointments, I told myself (to keep myself going) that I was writing the great American novel. I know the list is subjective and many more titles are more deserving. But the acknowledgement comes like a great light shining back and back to that first fraught line I wrote over and over again.
