🚴E-mountain bikes are rolling down more backcountry trails across America. Some people aren’t fans of this new trend, while others appreciate the increased access.
University of Montana doctoral student Abi Fuesler is one of the few researchers studying this growing trend.
“What is the role of technology in outdoor spaces, and how much impact are we comfortable with before it becomes too extreme?” she said. “There also is this broader social conversation about who is invited to be outside and participate in recreation.”
Fuesler has discovered the topic of e-mountain bikes sparks passion. Read more in our “E-Bikes in the Wild” feature: bit.ly/UMebikesWild

What if a small bruise could be a warning sign — and recognizing it early could save a child’s life?
Missoula pediatrician Dr. Laurie Carter is partnering with University of Montana researchers through RESOLVE, a new healthcare partnership with Providence Health, to pilot the Montana Child Abuse Network.
The telehealth program connects rural health providers and child welfare professionals with training, resources and specialists in child abuse care — helping them recognize early warning signs and intervene sooner.
The pilot is underway in western Montana, with hopes of expanding statewide and creating a model that could help communities beyond Montana.

Along the marshy shores of Jones Pond at the University of Montana’s Lubrecht Experimental Forest, wildlife biology students are helping launch a long-term research project to better understand western painted turtles and how climate change may shape their future.
Led by wildlife biology professor Erim Gómez, the study will track turtle populations over the next two decades, collecting data on size, weight, age and s*x. Because a turtle's s*x is influenced by nest temperature, researchers hope the project will reveal how a warming climate may affect future populations.
For students, the project offers more than data collection — it’s hands-on experience in the field, learning how to ask important questions about wildlife and habitat.
From setting traps to measuring and tagging turtles, UM students are helping build a record that could last generations. 🐢🌿
