Hello, friends of UM FLAT, the time has come to reap the rewards of our hard work- we harvested garlic from our garden beds! after months of planting, nurturing and patiently waiting, our garlic bulbs are ready to be unearthed.

What an amazing time at our apple gleaning event on the UM campus! 🍏🌳 Huge thanks to our volunteers from , friends and FLATmates who came out to help. Together, we collected a ton of delicious apples and had a blast doing it! 🍂💚

The last couple of weeks we’ve been busy welcoming three new residents, Phoebe, Andrei and Hannah! We’re so excited to have them and the experience they bring to the FLAT!

Here’s a look into our summer retreat where we planned our semester goals, reviewed that FLAT’s core values, and frolicked around Seeley Lake🐞 And also some photos from the grad student orientation!

One of our favorite things to do in the spring: scooping horse manure! 🐎💩 We use the p**p in our hot bed and garden as rich fertilizer! Always a good time!! 😁

Were you wondering why we were gleaning and pressing so many apples? Mark your calendars everyone! Our Harvest Party is happening SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, from 3 PM-6 PM!! 🎃🍂🍁🍲🥧

There will be a pie contest, live music, soup + bread, and a raffle! It's free to attend but if you want soup and pie, it'll be $10. Spread the word and get excited! 😁

Every Friday in February, we’re chatting with one of our FLAT residents for a “FLATmate in Focus” series! Today’s interview is with our beloved Coloradan and first-year co-director, Meghan!

1. Tell us a little about yourself. 

My name is Meghan (she/her) and I'm a first-year grad student in the EVST program! I grew up in beautiful Colorado and moved to Missoula from Boulder last summer. I love to garden, paint, and talk to my houseplants. I'm also a world-class seamstress. Just kidding, but I did learn a thing or two during one of our workshops last semester!

2. Thinking about your time at the FLAT, what's been a memorable experience that sticks out to you?

One of my most memorable experiences at the FLAT was the MEGA zucchini harvest we had last summer! After moving into the FLAT, I was gifted a zucchini from our garden that took me almost a week to eat. We continued to harvest huge zucchini for the rest of the season!  I loved brainstorming different ways to cook zucchini with my FLATmates :-)

3. What's your favorite eco life hack?

I love a clothing swap! Clothing swaps are a great way to pass on clothes I don't wear anymore to friends and add a new item to my wardrobe without buying anything new.

Climate Advocacy Day is an amazing opportunity to learn from featured speakers and connect with community members dedicated to protecting a livable climate in Montana. Check out for more info!

Our November workday was a hoot!🦉 We created insulated curtains to help improve our energy efficiency at the FLAT. It was a great learning experience and so much fun!
