The Brain Zone at spectrUM

The Brain Zone at spectrUM Neuroscience for all! Brain activities at the Brain Lab during Public Hours, Camps, Outreach, Brain/Lab Field Trips, Traveling Brain Exhibit.

The Big Sky Brain Project is funded by the National Institues of Health with the goal of fostering experiential neuroscience education for K-12 students. Created collaboratively by faculty from the University of Montana Neuroscience Center and the University's SpectrUM science museum, the project includes interactive exhibits and a working lab with hands-on neuroscience experiments. The Brain Lab features cutting-edge technologies in neuroscience like optogenetics for field trips and science camps. Exhibits are also used in a mobile program that brings these STEM resources to local and rural and tribal schools. The project co-directors are Michael Kavanaugh, Ph.D., Director of UM's Neuroscience Center and Holly Truitt, Director of SpectrUM.

For the past 5 years, spectrUM and the Big Sky Brain Project’s Brain Zone has been supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. As this grant sunsets, we are celebrating our team’s role in inspiring the many thousands of budding neuroscientists who have explored hands-on brain activities and neuroscience career pathways at the museum’s Brain Lab and with spectrUM’s statewide mobile science program. Beginning in September, spectrUM will continue offering BrainLab activities from 2-5 pm during museum public hours.
