🇬🇹💙 ¡Feliz Día de la Independencia, Guatemala! 💙🇬🇹

At Mi Pequeño Bilingüe, we love celebrating the many cultures, countries, and traditions that make our Spanish-speaking world so beautifully diverse. 🌎✨ But with Maestro Julio being proudly Guatemalan and all of our pequeños Figueroa being half Guatemalan, we definitely couldn’t let September 15th pass without a special celebration! 🇬🇹

This week is extra special at MPB as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with presentations from our own familias, sharing their countries, cultures, traditions, food, music, and stories with our pequeños. ❤️ We’re so excited to share some of those special moments with you soon!

Hoy celebramos a Guatemala—su gente, su cultura, sus tradiciones y sus raíces. 🇬🇹

If our kids can go through their entire day without speaking the minority language… why would they need to use it? 🤔

Sometimes, with the best intentions, we make things too easy. We translate for them. We answer when they respond in English. We give them the word before they’ve even had a chance to try.

But bilingual kids need a little friction.

Not shame. Not punishment. Not pressure. Just a little “Inténtalo otra vez” or “¿Cómo?” is often enough to give them a second to try again in the minority language.💛

Think about anything else we want our children to learn—reading, riding a bike, tying their shoes. Growth requires effort. Language is no different.

If we remove every moment of struggle, we can accidentally remove their need to communicate in the minority language, too.

They may understand everything we say… but understanding isn’t the same as speaking.

Sometimes we have to create the need. Give them a moment. Let them search for the words. Let it be a little uncomfortable.

Because a little friction can be where the language starts to grow. 🌱
