After more than 25 years of grant writing and fundraising, there are a few years my nervous system remembers clearly: 2008/09, 2020/21, and 2025. Thinking about them still brings a visceral reaction. But it also brings a deep sense of achievement from learning how to pivot when circumstances demand it.
Working alongside organizations that pressed forward, continued their critical work, and kept serving their communities, even through federal level chaos, was a reminder of why this work matters. I’m proud to celebrate what we accomplished together in 2025.

Child Abuse Prevention Online Auction by The Parenting Place & CAP Network of MT

Our work at the ACE Resource Network is based on the latest science that tells us how early adversity increases health risks throughout life. Just as the invention of the microscope allowed scientists to be able to see microbes for the first time, identify them as the cause of infection and develop antibiotics and vaccines - advances in neuroimagining and genomics allow us to measure how our early adversity can lead to prolonged activation of the stress response and changes to neurologic, immune, metabolic and genetic regulation. When we understand the science, we can act to prevent these harms. An ACE screen allows us to identify which patients are at high risk for having a dysregulated stress response. The good news is that the toxic stress response is TREATABLE with evidence-based interventions like mindfulness, mental health and certain nutritional strategies, like the Mediterranean diet. That’s how we change outcomes and heal our communities. I had the chance to talk about this very topic with Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider, host of the TED Health podcast, and am grateful to share why this matters so deeply.
