Every doctoral student wants to know how long Chapter 1 should be. My answer is always the same, and it is probably not what you are expecting. Chapter 1 does not have a required page count. It has required content: a problem statement, purpose statement, research questions, significance, background, theoretical framework, and definitions, at minimum. When all of those sections are fully developed and supported, the chapter is done. Page count follows content, not the other way around. Q10: What is a theoretical framework and how do I choose one?
