🧠 Be mindful of limiting beliefs about children with disabilities.

Especially when you’re in a position of leadership, the beliefs you hold and project can shape how others see a child’s potential. 🚫

Disability can become part of anyone’s life at any point — through a stroke, heart attack, traumatic brain injury (TBI), accident, illness, or other life-changing event.

So let’s lead with empathy, inclusion, and possibility. ❤️

Every child deserves to be seen for their strengths, supported in their needs, and given opportunities to grow — not defined by limitations.

✨ Change the narrative. Expand the possibilities.

🎥 RECORD. REVIEW. DOCUMENT.

ARD meetings can cover A LOT of information. Recording the meeting can help you:

📝 Review what was discussed
🧠 Process information after the meeting
📌 Keep an accurate record of questions, responses, and decisions
📂 Compare what was discussed with what is documented in the IEP/PWN

And remember… documentation matters. ✍🏼

🧩 AUTISM + SENSORY NEEDS?

If autism is a suspected or identified disability, consider requesting an Occupational Therapy (OT) evaluation to look at sensory needs and whether sensory factors may be impacting your child’s access to and participation in education.

Every child is different. The goal is to understand what your child needs to access, participate, and learn. ❤️

Vi una foto de un caldo y, de repente, me llevó a memorias muy bonitas con una persona muy especial para mí. 🥰🎶🇨🇴✍🏼

Funny how a simple photo, a familiar dish, a song… can take us right back to a moment, a place, or a person who left a mark on our hearts. ❤️

And that’s what these other photos reminded me of, too. 📸

I LOVE learning. 🤓📚
(And I may or may not be threatening to go to law school next 🤭🫠)

But the best part of learning has never been just collecting facts at conferences.

It’s the people.
The conversations.
The friendships.
The families who open their hearts and share their stories.
The connections that remind us that we’re not doing this work alone. ❤️‍🔥

🚨 WHY DON’T SCHOOL DISTRICTS TELL US ABOUT ALL THE SERVICES AVAILABLE TO OUR CHILDREN?

Too often, districts focus on the minimum—instead of making sure families understand the full range of supports, services, and options available.

That’s why knowledge matters. 🧠✨

🔎 Keep asking questions.
📚 Keep learning.
📝 Keep documenting.
💬 Look for answers when something doesn’t make sense.
🤝 Be an active participant in your child’s education.

You can work with the school AND still advocate for yourself.

Don’t blindly trust the process. Understand it.

Because no one knows your child better than YOU. ❤️

🚨 BEING DENIED THE AUTISM CONFERENCE? 🚨

Don’t just accept the “NO.” Know what to do next. 👇🏼

1️⃣ Call a Review ARD
Put your request on the record and ask the ARD committee to address it.

2️⃣ Record the meeting 🎥
Document what is discussed and decided.

3️⃣ DOCUMENT THE REFUSAL 📝
Ask the school to document the refusal AND the reasons for refusing in the PWN and ARD deliberations.

4️⃣ CHECK THE AUTISM SUPPLEMENT
Ask the school to document the reason for denying the conference in the official Autism Supplement.

5️⃣ CONSIDER A TEA COMPLAINT 📄
If you believe the district failed to provide FAPE or failed to consider your child’s individual needs, a TEA complaint may be an option.

📌 Documentation matters.
📌 Parent participation matters.
📌 Your child’s individual needs matter.

Knowledge is Power. ⚡️

Don’t just hear “NO.” Ask them to put the “WHY” in writing. ✍🏼

🌊 We’re busy helping families navigate the troubled waters of Special Education across the RGV. Advocacy never stops!

🧠 Parent Resource Network recently highlighted the importance of counseling throughout the different stages of development for children with disabilities. Support matters at every stage. ❤️

🏫 District Update: La Joya ISD & IDEA Public Schools are currently under state supervision/conservatorship related to various financial management concerns.

📚 And we’re keeping an eye on upcoming TAC changes resulting from recent legislation. These changes may impact school districts—and families should be paying attention. 👀

🚨 PARENTS ARE NOT A FORMALITY🚨

Is your ARD Committee dismissing your feedback?
🙅🏻‍♀️ Shutting down your concerns?
🚪 Entering the meeting with a closed mind?
📋 Making decisions about services, placement, or goals without meaningful consideration of your input?

🚩 That’s not meaningful parent participation.

PREDETERMINATION is an IDEA violation. ⚠️

The ARD Committee should not walk into a meeting with the decisions already made and simply expect you to sign off.

💥 Parents are EQUAL members of the IEP Team (ARD Committee).

Your voice matters.
Your input matters.
Your participation matters.

You are not there to rubber-stamp decisions. You are there to HELP MAKE THEM. ✊🏼

📣 KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. ADVOCATE WITH PURPOSE.
