Sinte Gleska University~Allied Health Program Says Goodbye
MISSION - The Sinte Gleska University~Allied Health program’s grant, titled: “South Dakota Allied Health Training Consortium – Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant”, will end on Friday, March 31st, 2017. Which means the program itself and the programs created under the 3-year grant will come to an end.
The programs that will be concluding are the Allied Health Degree (Associates of Applied Science, A.A.S., a 2-year degree), Emergency Medical Technician (Certificate), and the Home Health Technician (1-year Certificate).
This grant included in its Consortium: SGU, Lake Area Technical Institute, (Watertown, SD); Mitchell Technical Institute, (Mitchell, SD); Western Dakota Technical Institute, (Rapid City, SD); Oglala Lakota College, (Kyle, SD); and, the lead school, Southeast Technical Institute, (Sioux Falls, SD); as well as having a close working partnership with the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR), the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE), and the South Dakota Department of Health.
The main project of SGU~Allied Health was to prepare students for employment in high-demand, high-skilled occupations in the Health Care field in a short time frame. Other goals of the South Dakota Allied Health Training Consortium were to serve rural communities and reservations, and to increase the number of adults earning certificates, degrees, and diplomas. We also worked directly with the SGU Nursing program to assist in awarding the following credentials: Certificate in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S., 2-year Diploma) and an 18-month Certificate in Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN).
The Nursing Department will continue with their Nursing education in the CNA and LPN fields.
SGU~Allied Health worked with many of the local health care providers and educators in and around the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, and with many Rosebud Sioux Tribal programs such as: the Health Administration program, Community Services, Diabetes Prevention Program, Community Health Representatives (CHR), the Education Department, Elderly Concerns, Sicangu Nation Employment and Training Program, Tokala Inajinyo Su***de Prevention, Child Care Development, Women Infant and Children (WIC), Law Enforcement, the M**h Initiative Program, the Walking Forward program, Maternal & Child Health, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Commodity Food Distribution Program.
We’ve also worked with programs within the Rosebud Indian Health Service (IHS) such as with: Dietary, Public Health Nursing, the Patient Benefit Office, and the Ambulance Department.
We also had the good fortune to collaborate and partner with the Tree of Life Ministries, Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Health Board, SD Dept. of Social Service’s Adult Service & Aging, Horizon Health Care (Mission), White River Health Care Center, Wayne “Shoo” Bear Shield (Kidney Transplant Recipient), Rosebud Dialysis, University of South Dakota (USD) Sanford School of Medicine, Sanford Research, Sanford Health, Circle of Life Kola Home Care (Oglala, SD), the USD Medical Students, Steve Denoyer III at Wells Fargo, and, Dr. Mary Isaacson, Assistant Professor of Nursing at South Dakota State University.
And, of course we had all these SGU personnel and programs that also assisted with helping our grant become a success: Marianne Left Hand Bull and Dwayne Stenstrom (Counseling Resource Center), Midas Gunhammer (Financial Aid), Sammie Bordeaux-Seeger (Foundational Studies), Duane Hollow Horn Bear, Francis Cutt, and Sam High Crane (all from the Lakota Studies Department), Mike Dillon (Library), Connie One Star and her work crew, (Wakinyan Wanbli Multipurpose Building), Stacy Charging Hawk (Arts & Science Center), Jack Herman (Registrar’s), Phil Baird (Institutional Planning & Development), James High Pipe (I.T.), Shannon Dubray and Arlene Brandis (Institute of Technology), Kathy Boyd (Foundation), Maxine Bordeaux-Limo (President’s Office), and, Virginia Cozad, Rita Schneider, Briana Broschat, Melody Otte and Amber Medearis, (Nursing Dept.).
With all these programs, schools, businesses and individuals listed, we were able to work for a better health care future for our Sicangu Oyate. The RST Health Administration program and many of the health programs will continue to work on paving the way for a better health care system.
The Allied Health grant comprised of five employees: Jim Poignee, Project Manager; Maria Walking Eagle, Grant Manager; Denise One Star, Life Skills Coach; Teddie Rae Herman, Social Media Manager; and, Michelle Dog Eyes, Administrative Assistant.
Jim Poignee and Maria Walking Eagle will continue to stay on the project until September 30th, 2017. Jim will continue to oversee the grant and Maria will continue working on the compilation of the data for the grant.
The SGU~Allied Health office is located in the Zintkala Luta Lakota Wounspe Tipi, located on the main SGU campus.
