Red Door Studios offers classes and lessons focused on realistic drawing and painting techniques, with a strong emphasis on figurative subjects and portraiture. All instruction is provided by Lacey Lewis, a recognized figurative painter who has been teaching her craft for 10 years. Lewis describes her teaching methods as "Classical Atelier Inspired," combining elements of traditional techniques wi

th more contemporary concepts. She believes that incorporating a variety of philosophies in her teaching gives her students multiple tools to choose from when solving visual problems. In addition to private lessons, semi-private group lessons, and classes, Red Door Studios also offers drop-in figurative life drawing sessions that are open to the public.

Don’t just copy photos! Learn to draw from your own observation.
In this class, you’ll learn how to create stunningly realistic charcoal drawings from life. Our experienced instructor will guide you through the basics of charcoal drawing, from understanding the different types of charcoal to mastering the techniques of shading and blending. You’ll also learn how to capture subtle details, and how to edit out detail to create a more realistic composition.

By the end of the class, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to create beautiful, realistic charcoal drawings without having to rely on photos. You’ll also have the confidence to create your own artworks and take your drawing skills to the next level.

In just one week we’ll begin this class all about painting flowers and foliage, as well as composing them. Flowers present unique challenges due to color, transparency, structure and softness.

In this class you’ll learn both the underpainting and glazing methods as well as direct painting like the one in this video.

You won’t simply learn a list of landmarks: you’ll learn what to look for and how the anatomy affects the surface from a multitude of pose positions.

More intention behind every brush mark, less fussing and blending!

This class is not about copying John Singer Sargent’s paintings: It’s about understanding how he approached painting to create works that were both loose and accurate.

Together, we’ll slow down his process and translate it into practical steps you can use in your own work:

How to simplify complex subjects into clear value shapes
How to lay in color with confidence and resist overblending
How to suggest detail instead of painting every little thing
You’ll leave with a complete painting created from your own reference, using principles inspired by Sargent’s approach. You can work with any subject: Portrait, figure, still life, landscape, etc. You’ll have access to a library of references and still life objects at the studio or you can bring your own.

This class is ideal for intermediate oil painters who want more clarity, confidence, and vitality in their work.
