Phillip Johnson (Santee Sioux), age 45, is a high school equivalency (HSE) student at Sinte Gleska University (SGU). He wants to better his community by bettering himself and being a role model to his children. Phillip shares that pursuing an education at a tribal college education is important “because I have older kids that need to see me do it and then maybe they will do it.”

HSE students like Phillip are essential to the higher education pathway. Many tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) like SGU have HSE programs to support relatives wanting to continue their education.
