INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS
(Aligned with WAEC, NECO, UTME, IGCSE and A-Level syllabuses)
1. Meaning and Definition of Physics
Physics is the branch of science that deals with the study of matter, energy, space, and time, and the laws governing their interactions.
It seeks to explain natural phenomena such as motion, heat, electricity, light, sound, gravity, magnetism, and atomic structure using experiments, observations, measurements, and mathematical models.
In simple terms:
Physics explains how the universe works and why things behave the way they do.
Physics is regarded as the most fundamental of all sciences because it provides the principles upon which other sciences like chemistry, engineering, astronomy, and technology are built.
2. Nature of Physics
Physics is characterized by:
1. Observation
Careful study of natural phenomena.
Example:
Falling objects
Motion of planets
Flow of electricity
2. Measurement
Quantifying physical quantities using instruments.
Examples of measurements:
Length (meter rule)
Time (stopwatch)
Mass (balance)
3. Experimentation
Testing ideas through controlled experiments.
4. Mathematical Formulation
Physical laws are expressed mathematically.
Example:
F = ma
This law relates force, mass, and acceleration.
5. Formulation of Laws and Theories
Observations and experiments lead to:
Physical laws
Principles
Theories
Example:
Newton’s laws of motion
Laws of thermodynamics
Maxwell’s equations
3. Scope of Physics
The scope of physics refers to the extent of areas where physics principles are applied.
Physics covers the study of:
Motion and forces
Heat and temperature
Waves and sound
Light and optics
Electricity and magnetism
Atomic and nuclear structure
Energy and power
Space and the universe
Physics also extends into many interdisciplinary fields such as:
Medical physics
Biophysics
Geophysics
Environmental physics
Nanotechnology
Thus, physics plays a role in almost every aspect of modern life.
