Common App is officially open! And every year, I hear from two totally different kinds of families right about now.

The first: "We have to get this done RIGHT NOW."

Spoiler alert: you don't. August 1 is just the first day you can apply — it's not a deadline. For almost every school, nothing's actually due until mid-September at the earliest, often not until October. Applying at midnight on August 1 doesn't earn you bonus points. Applying with essays that are actually good does. Mid-August, even September 1 — that's still early. Still smart. Take the time.

The second reaction: "Wait . . . we haven't even started thinking about this."

Also fine. You're not behind. But it is time to get moving — and I can help with that.

Here's what matters: up until now, students could only see last year's application — old prompts, old supplements, none of it guaranteed to carry over.

Starting August 1, the real 2026-2027 questions go live. That's the first moment you can actually track what your schools are asking this year, instead of guessing off last year's version.

So no, you don't need to do anything dramatic right this minute. But it's a great day to go pull up the actual prompts for your list and let your brain start chewing.

One by one, some of the most prominent universities in the country are dropping their supplemental essay requirements for 2026-2027 applicants.

UVA started the trend last cycle. This summer, UGA, Tulane, the University of Miami, UNC Chapel Hill, and now Georgia Tech have followed.

So what does this mean? Do colleges not care about writing anymore?

Not at all. But it does change the stakes.

When students had multiple essays to submit to a school, there was room to tell their story from several angles. The personal statement could capture one side of who they are. A supplement could reveal another. More writing opportunities meant more chances to make sure nothing important got left out — to get all the right "nutrients" into the application, if you will.

Now, at a growing number of schools, the personal statement has to carry more of that weight. Which means the work of figuring out what to say — and what to prioritize — matters more than ever. So does knowing how to use every space available: the personal statement, the activity list, the additional information section, challenges and circumstances. None of those went away. They just got more important.

I've been helping students figure out how to tell their complete story for nine years. This year, that skill matters more than it ever has.

It's the end of July. Summer is not over, but it sure is moving. If your rising senior hasn't started their personal statement yet, now is the moment.

That's me and Maria Hogge from Mending Strides Ranch, Inc - Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning at the Mint Hill Chamber luncheon today — and she asked me something that's been rattling around in my head ever since.

She said most of her volunteers are senior citizens. The teens who sign up rarely stick around through the training. And she wanted to know — is volunteering even a big deal for college applications anymore?

It is. But here's the thing: a lot of kids are doing it wrong.

Colleges aren't impressed by a box checked. They're not just counting hours. What they're actually looking for is the why behind the what — sustained, consistent involvement in something a student genuinely cares about.

Five hours at Mending Strides over the summer to hit your NHS requirement? Not that impressive, and admissions officers can tell.

One hour a week, every week, because you love working with animals — or you're interested in equine therapy, or you care about what it does for veterans? That's a completely different story. That's the kind of commitment that makes an essay (and an application) actually stand out.

If your kid is choosing a volunteer commitment right now, encourage them to pick the thing they'd keep doing even if nobody was tracking the hours. That's the one worth writing about.

Big news! UNC Chapel Hill just announced they're removing their two short answer supplemental questions for 2026-2027 applicants. No more supplements. Just the personal statement, your activity list, and the additional information section.

For families in the Charlotte area — and honestly anywhere in North Carolina — this is significant news. Chapel Hill is one of the most popular schools my students apply to, and it has one of the earliest early action deadlines in the country: October 15. That's not a lot of runway once school starts in the fall.

Chapel Hill joins a growing list of prominent universities to drop supplements for 2026-2027, including UGA, Tulane, the University of Miami, and UVA (which arguably started the trend last fall).

So, what does this mean? Do universities not care about writing anymore?

Not at all. Here's what UNC actually said: "The required Common Application essay, extracurricular activities, and additional information sections will continue to be spaces where students can share their voice and passions."

They're not saying writing doesn't matter. They're saying the personal statement — that 650-word essay on the Common App — is where your student's voice needs to show up. And with one fewer thing to write for Chapel Hill, there's no excuse for that essay not to be great.

Summer is the time to get this done. If your rising senior hasn't started thinking about their personal statement, now is exactly the right moment.

Quick update from the Common App world — and this one's actually kind of nice.

Starting this fall, the position/leadership field on the activity list will be optional. Right now, every activity entry has a spot for a title or role. For student council president or varsity team captain, that makes total sense. But a lot of what students actually do doesn't come with a title.

The kid who manages the family finances while their parents work nights. The one who's been baking and selling at the farmers market since eighth grade. The teenager who spent three summers teaching themselves to code, just because they wanted to. None of those experiences come with an official job title, and students have always had to get creative (or just awkward) filling in that field.

Common App is basically acknowledging what I've been telling students for years: your activity list is not a résumé. It's a picture of how you actually spend your time. Titles are one way to tell that story — but they're not the only way.

If you have a rising senior who does a lot that's hard to put in a box, this is for you. The activity list is one of the most underestimated parts of the Common App — and one of the things I help students do really well.

Yesterday I had the best time at the Independence High School Career and College Fair.

I love these events — getting to talk with students at every stage, from 9th graders who aren't quite thinking about college yet to seniors who are already celebrating where they're headed next year.

But I'll be honest: my favorite conversations were with the juniors who are just starting to realize the essays are coming. That mix of "I know I need to do this" and "I have no idea where to start" is exactly where I do my best work.

It's AP exam time, which means I'm spending the better part of this week doing one of the most glamorous jobs in education: sitting very still in a quiet room making sure Bluebook behaves.

Truly riveting stuff.

Though honestly? There's a part of it I really do love. Some of the kids in the room are students I worked with last fall — and it's pretty great to see them wrapping up their senior year and getting ready to take that next step.

But while I've been watching them work, I've been thinking about the students who are next — the rising seniors who are about to have a completely different kind of writing experience this summer. No prompts they crammed for. No right answer. Just: here's a blank page, tell us who you are.

That's the personal statement. And it is so much harder than any AP exam question — and so much more interesting, when you get it right.

This week I got to do something a little different: I volunteered as an evaluator for scholarship applications submitted to the Mint Hill Chamber.

It was a pleasure to put my skills to use for the benefit of the Chamber and Mint Hill’s young people, but It was also one of the most useful things I've done for my work in a long time.

Sitting on the other side of the application — reading through what students submitted, noticing what made me lean in and what made my eyes glaze over — reminded me of exactly why the writing matters so much. The students who stood out weren't necessarily the ones with the most impressive résumés. They were the ones whose essays made me feel like I was reading about a real, specific person — not a polished version of what they thought a scholarship committee wanted to hear. They had a strong and clear point of view and showed genuine passion and purpose through a cohesive story. The applications that stood out were more than just a resume: they were a vivid representation of who the student is, what’s important to them, and where they plan to take it in the future.

Nine years of coaching college essays, and I still learn something every time I get to see the process from a different angle.

This afternoon I got to spend some time with the Junior Ambassadors at the Mint Hill Chamber and it reminded me exactly why I love this work.

We talked through everything they'll be writing for the Common App — the personal statement, activity list, honors and awards, the additional info sections, supplemental essays – what each piece is actually for, how long it should be, a few tips to make the most of the space. And we talked timing: what they should be focused on right now, what they can knock out this summer, and how to set themselves up for success.

A moment that stuck with me was a student named Alex, who asked really thoughtful questions about her activity list — specifically which experiences to prioritize and how to capture everything they meant in just 150 characters. That's exactly the kind of question that tells me a student is taking this seriously, and it's the kind of thing I love helping students figure out.

If you lead or volunteer with an organization that serves high schoolers — a church youth group, a neighborhood association, a school booster club, anywhere teens show up — I'd love to come do something like this for your group. It's free, it's practical, and it gives students a real head start on one of the most stressful parts of senior year.
