📌Join us for the tenth session of The Wonder Series- Still Learning: Reading Brain Development in Adulthood

The reading brain never stops changing. We'll explore what research tells us about adult literacy, lifelong vocabulary growth, and what it means to support adults who are still building foundational skills, without shame and with real science behind it. “Learning to read better at 40 is not failure. It's brain science”.

✨Early intervention doesn't always happen in a clinic—it often happens right where children learn and grow best: at home!

At-home early intervention allows children to build new skills during everyday routines like playtime, meals, reading, and getting dressed. Families also receive hands-on support and coaching, making it easier to continue learning between visits. When children learn in familiar environments, they feel more comfortable, stay engaged, and can better apply new skills in their daily lives.

At our annual Celebrating Independence Picnic, Independence, Inc. was proud to recognize Holden Boully as our 2026 Youth Advocate of the Year!

For Holden, disability rights are personal.

Growing up with a disability and receiving special education services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Holden experienced firsthand many of the barriers young people with disabilities can face. Along the way, he learned something incredibly important: his voice mattered.

Holden learned to advocate for himself during his own IEP meetings, making sure he was included in decisions about his education and received the accommodations and support he needed to succeed. Those experiences helped shape his passion for disability rights and his belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Today, Holden is using his experiences to help other young people find their own voices.

Through Youth POV, presentations, educational programs, and community outreach, Holden works to give youth with disabilities the knowledge, confidence, and resources they need to understand their rights, break down barriers, make their own choices, and advocate for the futures they want.

That is what the Independent Living Movement is all about.

Nothing About Us Without Us begins when young people understand that they deserve a seat at the table and that their experiences and opinions matter.

Congratulations, Holden! We are proud to recognize you as the 2026 Youth Advocate of the Year and excited to see the difference you will continue to make in our community and in the disability rights movement. 💙

🏆Congratulations, Holden Boully! 🏆

We are so proud to recognize our Youth POV Coordinator, Holden Boully, for receiving the Youth Advocate of the Year Award!

Holden has not only advocated for himself throughout his own journey, but has risen above challenges and continues to inspire and teach others how to use their voice and advocate for themselves. Your voice matters, and there is no one more deserving of this award than Holden. A special thank you to Independence, Inc. for celebrating Holden and recognizing his hard work, dedication, and advocacy.

✨ Did you know?

• Most students receiving special education spend the majority of their day in general education classrooms.
• Special education is based on a student's individual needs—not a label.
• Students with IEPs can participate in sports, clubs, field trips, and other school activities.
• Schools cannot require a child to take medication to receive special education services.
• The goal of special education is to help students succeed with the supports they need.

Understanding the facts helps families make informed decisions and advocate with confidence. Together, we can replace myths with knowledge and ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.
