Honoring Juneteenth.

Today we recognize and celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Slavery in Confederate states was abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. However, full recognition of that proclamation did not occur until June 19, 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation was said to have been first publicly read in Texas by Union soldiers.

Glen Lake celebrates Miss E, who is having a milestone birthday on June 17th. This past school year was Julie Ellingson's first as Glen Lake’s Developmental Adaptive Physical Education teacher and her 27th year as a teacher. Glen Lake shared with Miss E that we've long dreamed of hosting an event to honor our students with disabilities as athletes. Miss E took the idea and ran with it, collaborating with 5th Grade students to create Glen Lake's first annual CommUNITY Day! It was epic, and we couldn't be more grateful.

When asked about her birthday, Miss E said, "I’m proudly 50. As I reflect on where I am at this moment, FLOURISHING best describes it, and being part of Glen Lake is one of the many reasons why. I’m a connector and thrive in spaces where I feel a sense of belonging and a true purpose larger than myself. I’m grateful to have found you all."
