Protecting Minnesota’s water resources is worth every shovel full. That’s why a team of researchers and students from the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center, University of Minnesota Extension, and the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) dug soil pits across South Central Minnesota to examine what’s happening beneath the surface. By mapping how water moves through different soils, they’re providing critical data to help watershed planners, modelers, and local farmers build land systems resilient against extreme weather. 🪏 https://twin-cities.umn.edu/news-events/managing-invisible-infrastructure-behind-minnesotas-water

Invasive species professionals tap University of Minnesota expertise 07/28/2026

“I’ve lived in seven states. None take aquatic invasive species as seriously as Minnesota - by far.” — Alex Bajcz, Quantitative Ecologist for the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC)

On Long Lake in eastern Minnesota, researchers and local partners are testing an innovative, lower-impact way to manage invasive Eurasian watermilfoil. Screened underwater exclosures protect native milfoil weevils from hungry panfish, giving the insects a chance to do what they do best: feed on one of the state's most persistent aquatic invaders.

It's a promising example of how community expertise and University of Minnesota research are coming together to advance biological solutions that could help lakes across the state.
