The William I. To this end the Institute provides a meeting place for theorists from around the globe to exchange and develop ideas.
Fine Theoretical Physics Institute (FTPI) was established in 1987 as part of the School of Physics and Astronomy, with the goal of conducting research in theoretical physics at a world-class level. The most important function of FTPI is to produce significant, exciting, and sound theoretical physics that will have an impact on physics as a whole. FTPI sponsors several workshops annually and runs o

Title: Workholes, Chaos, and Black Hole Microstates
Abstract: There is a wealth of evidence that black holes are quantum mechanical systems, replete with a spectrum of microstates approximately counted by the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. In this seminar I will present evidence that, at least in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, black holes exhibit long-range level repulsion in their microstate spectrum. This repulsion is encoded by wormhole amplitudes, and is consistent with the predictions made by random matrix theory for any chaotic many-body quantum system.
