Our hearts are heavy this week as we grapple with the news that Jody Williams, book artist, teacher, and longtime member of the MCBA community, passed away.

Jody was a two-time winner of the Minnesota Book Artist Award, presented in collaboration with The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, first in its inaugural year in 2008 and again in 2019, for her book, "For Now." Small in scale, Jody's impeccable artist's books combined poetic writing, distinctive illustration, innovative structures, and a sense of magic and discovery. Jody taught printmaking and book arts at MCBA and at MCAD, and taught workshops and presented lectures at museums and colleges across the United States and in Europe. Her work, under the imprint Flying Paper Press (https://www.flyingpaperpress.com) is in the collections of the Walker Art Center, Minnesota Historical Society, and the University of Minnesota. She will be deeply missed by friends, family, and the book arts community.

Those of you who are subscribed to our e-newsletter (mnbookarts.org/news) can expect a more in-depth community tribute next week. Please DM us if you would like to contribute. ❤️

Meet Liz Henrich (she/her), our new Development and Events Associate!

🛶Most recently, Liz spearheaded fundraising at Urban Boatbuilders, a youth-focused nonprofit that teaches life skills and career readiness through hands-on woodworking projects. 🪵 She has also helped organize ChromaZone, a mural festival in St. Paul.
Liz holds a BFA in communications design from Pratt Institute and a certificate in museum studies from the University of Washington. Outside of work you can find her collecting stamps and working in her local community garden! 🥒🍅

New exhibition at MCBA: Others by UK-based book artist Hilke Kurzke! Get up close and personal with these seven paper mâché heads in our Outlook Gallery.

As an immigrant from Germany, Hilke is interested in the idea of “otherness,” a concept that has recently been splitting societies everywhere. With each of the heads sculpted with "several different references to keep each one ambivalent racially and with respect to age and gender," the installation challenges the viewer to “bear with difference and investigate for themselves what makes someone other to them,” Hilke writes.

Visit us and see the exhibition October 7, 2023–January 20, 2024. Learn more on our website: https://www.mnbookarts.org/hilke-kurzke-others/
