On this day in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Major General Gordon Granger read General Orders No. 3 to more than a quarter million unlawfully still enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay, TX. Celebrating Juneteenth is symbolic of more than just freedom by decree. It is symbolic of never giving up hope. “Your joy is your sorrow unmasked…The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.” ~Kahlil Gibran

The Visual Arts department, led by the amazing Mr. Jake, is blossoming & we can’t wait to continue to show our thriving young artists. Taking advantage of the temporary construction walls was a bright spot during some hard days. And showcasing the students artistic expressions as their final projects was a joy. Enjoy a few here. 💙🎨

The North High community mourns alongside our little sister school, Franklin, today. Ms. Strong was a bright, colorful, shining beacon of light that spread to us all. She was more than an Art teacher. She was Art. She leaves a void that can only be filled by the many young artists she helped to mold who will one day shine even brighter than she could’ve imagined. 💙

Melodee Strong, the Minneapolis muralist, illustrator and beloved art educator, has died following a battle with cancer.

Known for creating art that celebrates culture, representation and belonging, Melodee spent decades shaping both the Twin Cities landscape and generations of students.

Her murals remain throughout Minneapolis as lasting reminders of the communities she celebrated and the countless lives she touched.

Saye’s journey is one worth celebrating. Not only because of the hard school days he had to overcome to get to graduation day; but also because of the village who never wavered in their support of him. From teachers who insisted he could do it, to coaches who pushed & believed, to a family who stood steady by his side - Saye walked that stage last Friday morning, then went up to State (waited in a long rain delay) and took Gold Friday night (setting a new Sections Record at that!). Today he was honored by our Superintendent & our hearts are bursting with pride. Well done, Saye!
