Last week the North High Journalism Team got to visit the New York Times and NBC News in New York. Students got to have in-depth Q&As with reporters and broadcasters in two of the most prestigious news rooms in the country! They were able to see first-hand how breaking news makes its way on to the air and in print. Students also go to build their photography portfolios by taking pictures in Times Square, Washing Square Park, Dumbo Park, Korea Town, and the Empire State Building. Journalism is alive and well at North High and North News!

Keeping the important things the important things this Memorial Day.
PURPOSE. Memorial Day is a day to remember the men & women who lost their lives while serving in our military. Though honoring veterans is always worthy, this is not Veterans Day. Memorial Day can be a very personal day for those who’ve lost loved ones in active duty. And though it also marks the unofficial start of summer & filled with food, fun & family - many pause at 3pm for a moment of silence for those who paid the ultimate price.
HISTORY. The first known & documented May Memorial Day was May 1, 1865 when ten thousand, mostly African American, South Carolinians held a parade, heard speeches & dedicated graves in Charleston. 267 Union Soldiers had died in a Confederate jail there & buried in a mass grave. It was on that day, they were placed in individual graves.
RELEVANCE. No war has lost more soldiers than the war America had with itself. Losing the day to a celebration of summer has come under scrutiny from observers for decades who argue the seriousness of the day has been lost. But it is okay to celebrate life this Memorial Day. Both joy & sorrow can coexist. Without one, the other loses its potency.
