Spent the day learning about paper marbling at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Looking forward to learning more patterns in my next class!

Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop 10/22/2017

Earlier this month, Chibi Press tabled at the Twin Cities Zine Fest. All my proceeds from sales at the zine fest ($62, woohoo!) have been donated to the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, who have a donation match happening this month. Please consider supporting their important work!

"A generous group of donors will match all donations made during the month of October, up to a total $8,000. That means that if you make a donation before November 1st, your contribution will be doubled.

MPWW is a small organization with a big mission. Your donations will be used in 2018 to provide over 25 high-quality creative writing classes, grow our incredibly successful mentor program from 50 participants to 75, bring visiting writers into prisons, print an anthology of our students’ writing, showcase our students' work at public readings, and more.

Craft and community are flourishing in Minnesota’s prisons. Thank you for your support. We can’t do it without you."

Chibi Press tabled this past weekend at Twin Cities Zine Fest for the first time! I had a great time, and particularly enjoyed meeting so many librarians and library lovers. TCZF organizer Violet kindly purchased and tweeted this pic of one of my prints. And a librarian from Gustavus Adolphus College even purchased one of my zines to add to their collection!

A couple of months ago, I took a class on rebinding paperback books at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. We all worked on copies of Frankenstein, since 2016 is the 200th anniversary of its writing. We practiced removing the original cover, scraping off old glue, and gluing the text block in class. At home, I created a new cover for my book, and you can see some of the process of that here, too. I added a closure to the book and immediately dropped it off for an upcoming exhibition, forgetting to take a picture of the final product! So a last picture of this project will be posted when the exhibition is up.

April is National Poetry Month, and each April, one day is observed as Poem in Your Pocket Day. I started making a one-sheet book with some of my Short Poems on Working in a College Library a few weeks beforehand, but this year the observance fell on the day that Prince died. It didn't feel right to post that day, but I did want to share the book with you all anyway. If you've never made a book before, one-sheet books are pretty quick and easy. The PDF of the book itself plus written instructions is available on my website at https://chibipress.wordpress.com/2016/04/26/poems-for-your-pocket/ . There are also photos illustrating each step of the process. Please feel free to pass the books, in PDF or folded form, on to anyone who might be interested. And it would be great to see your folded books! You can share them here, in the comments at the website, or on Instagram (, , ). You could even color or otherwise alter them to make them your own!

I took a Japanese papermaking class at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts this weekend. It was a lot of work, but we also got to make a lot of paper!
