JOINT STATEMENT ON THE KILLING OF DAUNTE WRIGHT

Daunte Wright should be alive. Yesterday he was killed at the hands of local law enforcement in our community.

The tragedy of another Black man killed at the hands of police is heartbreaking and traumatic. Many of us feel triggered and traumatized by this latest of several such cases coming as it does in the middle of the Derek Chauvin trial, and after countless years, decades, and centuries of racist legal attacks on the Black community. On a very deep and personal level, we mourn together. The wrongful killings of Black people by police officers must stop. We offer our deepest sympathies to and stand with Daunte Wright’s family and friends and add our voices to the outrage the community is expressing at his senseless killing.

While it is our job at Mitchell Hamline to teach students about the criminal justice system, we do so knowing it’s a flawed and too often racist system that must change. Our job is also to protect, support, and educate students to become the next generation of lawyers, advocates, and community leaders who will help make those changes.

But we must do more. We must do everything we can to dismantle systemic racism in the criminal justice system, and we know that none of it comes in time to make a difference for George Floyd, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, Jamar Clark or, yesterday, for Daunte.

While details continue to unfold, we join with the calls of the community seeking justice for Daunte, his family, and our community.

Please take care of yourselves and one another, and please do not hesitate to reach out to any one of us for any assistance or support we can provide.
Signed,

Anthony Niedwiecki, President and Dean

Good luck to all our students and graduates who are taking the MPRE this week!

03/22/2021

For those taking the MPRE next week, here are some helpful hints from our Academic Excellence classes:
- If you truly don't know the answer or that area of law, skip it to come back to it later.
- If you partially know the issue being tested, work the problem and try to determine at least the conclusion or the reason. Cross out any answers that don't match or those that are absurd.
- Before taking the exam, choose a default answer. For any questions you left blank because you truly have no clue about, choose your default answer. Use the same answer choice each time for these.

Here are common tricks used by MPRE/bar exam writers:
- having incomplete or incorrect definitions in the answer choices
- using fancy terminology (like Latin)
- correct answer choices that seem too obvious

How to work an MPRE/bar exam problem:
- Read the call of the question quickly.
- Scan the answers to identify the area of law.
- Cover your answer choices.
- Read the fact pattern. Mark up and annotate.
- Uncover the question.
- Look at your notes/annotations.
- Determine your conclusion and why.
- Uncover your answer choices.
- Cross out answers that don't match your conclusion. Also, cross out any answers that are absurd.
- With the choices that are left, select the choice that matches your conclusion AND reason.

Classmates and Friends,

We echo Dean Niedwiecki’s recent message regarding the tragic hate crimes that took place in Atlanta this week. The incident was heartbreaking.

We cannot imagine all that our classmates are going through, and we are sorry if you are hurting right now. We believe it’s not only important to speak up, show our support, and denounce the actions of those who commit hate crimes, but to also ensure these statements are backed by actions and commitments to always use our voices.

Since the shootings, we have reached out to and met with fellow students from the Asian community and will continue to find ways to improve as allies in stopping hate against all communities. We’ve communicated with members of the MHSL administration, SBA, professors, and other students regarding the shooting and other acts of hate that should not be tolerated on or off campus. When we ran for office almost a year ago, we said we would be inclusive to all students, and we remain committed to making long-term changes to classes, bylaws, and student conduct to support students in our last few weeks in office.

Please continue to join us in this fight to promote tolerance and inclusion by checking on your friends, families, and classmates and continuing to advocate on their behalf.

If there’s anything that we can do to support you or your classmates, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We appreciate you, your hard work and advocacy, and your commitments to each other.

Always our best,

Amber and Kirsty
SBA President & Vice President
