Hello all,

We'd like to congratulate all of our MUSA Challenge participants for doing such a wonderful job at tournament last Saturday! It's always great to see everyone step up to the moment! As always, there were some great battles, surprise outcomes, and quality life lessons learned. It's nice to see all the hard work pay off and the skills grow. Great job everyone - our entire team of instructors are really proud of how well the kids are doing!

We'd like to give a special thanks to all the parent volunteers who jumped in to help with concessions. We couldn't do it without you and we appreciate your willingness to assist where help was needed. An extra special thank you to Jules Lehto for once again leading the charge back there!

Finally, we have gone through all the results, created a winner's list, and determined this year's grand champions. As a reminder, to qualify for Grand Champion status, participants MUST compete in all division categories (Open Hand Form, Weapon Form, Sparring, Grappling, & Sword Fighting --- Tigers need to do Basics, Sparring, Grappling, & Sword Fighting). Then all the places are tallied between the events for all competitors who participated in all categories. 1st place finishers receive 10 points, 2nd place gets 5 points, 3rd place gets 2.5.

Our Grand Champions this year are:
Tiger Girl = Rubi Warner
Tiger Boy = Miles Deutschman
Junior Girl = Margot Beukema
Junior Boy = Leo Benoit
TSD Teen Girl = Olivia Solano Morales
TSD Teen Boy = Varek Bartsh Montero
HRD Teen Girl = Penelope Mendiola (Grand Champion since 2022!)

LAST CHANCE For Spring Break Day Camps

Hello everyone,

Spring Break is ALMOST here! If the kids don't have plans yet, send them over! They can burn some energy, get in good training, and have some fun!!!

Our regular traditional classes will still be in session over spring break, however, NO Afterschool program - the only options are the day camps for that crew.

See previous msg for the latest reminders:

-------Previous Email Below-------

Spring Break and Remaining Release Day Camps:

We have had a couple people asking about the upcoming Spring Break Camps, and YES, you are welcome to do individual days for that! While we are running sessions each day of the break, we know some people are traveling here and there, so totally no problem to pick and choose what works for you. Summer Camps are setup for full week participation, but School Day Camps are always individual days so jump on in with whatever works with your schedule.

The training is going to be focused on training and prep for the upcoming tournament. So, for anyone looking to step-up and refine some skills to get ready for their performances, these camp sessions are a great opportunity!

*Reminder that there is No Afterschool during that week since all schools are on break, but we will have all Traditional Classes still in session.

Each week is its own specialized workshop of martial art training plus a unique theme of activities. The training in these weeks is VERY helpful for the kids of all levels. Because we spend the time focusing in on the subject matter for the week, we can really fine-tune some fundamentals and then also get into some more advanced concepts. For the kids looking to get a boost in skills, these summer camps are great!

Don’t forget the archery, play time, and fun too! Hwa Rang Do is always a blast!

MUSA Challenge Tournament Saturday April 25th (required event for all students)

-Participation is required for all students, so we do expect this once-per-year event to be chosen over other sports that have multiple games and tournaments each season.
--We will be doing some special practice and preparation in classes as we approach the event. Kids will be competing with peers of similar ages & belt ranks.
Expect an all-day event from 9am until late afternoon, depending on your chosen events.
-Students must compete in at least 2 events, but are encouraged to compete in all; TGT members must compete in all 5 (Weapon Form, Open Hand Form, Grappling, Sparring, Sword Fighting)
----Tiger events: Little Tigers will do their Belt Basics in place of Open Hand Form, and they will not have a Weapon Form event. Tiger event options are Basics, Grappling, Sparring, and Sword Fighting. If they do not have a set of sparring armor, their options are limited to Basics and Grappling. Contact Lia to purchase armor (email above).
-Concessions will be available on-site. Please consider being a parent volunteer to help run it! Leave a note in the comment section upon registration if you'd like to be added to the volunteer list.

2026 Hwa Rang Do Summer Camp Sessions:

Session 1: Amazing Race + Sparring Camp | June 15-19

Activities: Get ready for the ultimate adventure! Our Amazing Race summer camp turns every day into an exciting new challenge! Campers will work in small teams to solve clues, overcome obstacles, and race to the finish line each day. With teamwork, exploration, and high-energy activities at the heart of the experience, kids will build confidence, make new friends, and work together to race for the ultimate prize!

Training: Point sparring is a fast-paced, competitive game that relies on speed, accuracy, and a keen sense of timing. This year's camp will focus on developing these key skills plus many more. Aside from the martial art components, sparring demands a deep reservoir of endurance, agility, and general flexibility to aid in the student’s success during competition. Great for all ages and experience levels, this week of practice, drilling, and matching will culminate in an exciting inter-camp tournament!

----------

Session 2: Builder’s Blast + Forms Camp | June 22-26

Activities: This week is all about building and construction challenges! We will experiment with a variety of materials - cardboard, paper, clay, foam, plaster, wood, and more. Build models, tabletop terrains, planes, bridges, towers, forts, and armor. Who can make the biggest, strongest, tallest creation? Come test your skills and innovation to find out!

Training: As humans, movement is something we often take for granted in our day-to-day lives. Rarely do we focus on how our bodies are moving through space, the cadence of our breathing, or the intensity of our focus. Martial forms are a detail-oriented study in the mechanics of motion, fluidity, and power generation through a choreographed sequence of techniques. Once the basic movement pattern is learned, the participant then seeks to develop the power of expression and performance on their way to mastery. Forms are a methodical journey of mindfulness and meditation in action!

----------

Session 3: Myths, Magic, & Legends + Weaponry Camp | July 13-17

Activities: Come embark on a magical journey full of adventure and fantasy! This week, we will explore tales of mythical beasts, enchanted lands, and legendary heroes from around the world. Craft mystical artifacts, solve ancient riddles, and tackle magical team quests in a mystical week of fun. Discover the magic of folklore while building confidence, teamwork, and a sense of adventure.

Training: Get ready to duel! This exciting camp is one of our many fan-favorites. Armor up for a high-speed week of precision arts that challenge the student’s focus and composure as they train to become one with the sword. This camp will build from beginner to advanced concepts in basic matching, etiquette, and technique. As a supplement to foam sword matching, we will also be practicing weapon forms using the ssangjyel b**g (nun-chucks), jang b**g (long staff), and mok gum (wooden sword).

----------

Session 4: Get In The Game! + Grappling Camp | July 27-31

Activities: Come enjoy a week of game design and play with us! Try out all different kinds of games - board games, indoor and outdoor sports, and team games, with plenty of opportunities for fun and working together! Kids will also design their own game, individually or in a small group, and try the games the rest of the campers create!

Training: The art of grappling is a mentally strategic and physically technical sport akin to a one-on-one chess match. Beginners will work to master the fundamental aspects of takedowns, control, positions, and pins, while intermediate and advanced practitioners will build on this foundation with throws and submissions done in a controlled and safe manner. Combined with a strong focus on calisthenics and cardiovascular conditioning, this camp will provide ample hands-on experience with a winner-take-all tournament to cap the week off!

----------

Session 5: Science Explorers + Self-Defense Camp | August 10-14

Activities: Blast into a world of curiosity and discovery with our science-themed summer camp! Transform into a hands-on scientist with exciting experiments, field explorations, and demonstrations. Explore colorful chemical reactions, work together to solve creative STEM challenges, and investigate our natural world through the wonderful lens of science.

Training: Along with understanding the psychological aspects of de-escalation and being poised, Hwa Rang Do offers a limitless variety of potential techniques that deal with personal safety and self-defense. This exciting camp will be a workshop in Ilbo Daeryun (one-step sparring) and Hoshin Sul (joint lock manipulations) techniques, with the ultimate aim of being able to defend, takedown, and submit an aggressor quickly and effectively.

----------

Session 6: Fight Scene Choreography Camp | August 24-28

Activities & Training: The Grand Finale! Our most popular camp is back again. Last year’s performance was the highlight of the summer, and this year’s will be even better! Fight scene choreography allows our students to let their creativity and performances shine as they develop, perfect, and display their martial skills for their fellow students and family members with an end-of-camp show! Instructors will help guide the students in crafting a technical, well-rehearsed presentation that includes dialogue, stunts, and martial art action! No previous martial art experience is needed, but we are calling all super stars - see you there!

“Joy & Sorrow” — an arresting existential exposé by Grandmaster Taejoon Lee, featured in Budo International, Feb 2026

“A deeper truth is that sorrow often carries hidden joy within it. Consider the initial sting of failure: a student may feel embarrassment, frustration, sadness, and/or disappointment. But beneath this surface, there is meaning. The sorrow reflects the value of what was attempted: the love of learning, the desire to excel, the appreciation of the teacher’s guidance, or the significance of the relationships and experiences that created the moment. Sorrow is the shadow of love; it marks what we hold dear. Without sorrow, joy would be shallow and fleeting, for it is the contrast that gives pleasure its depth.
The mature warrior asks a crucial question: “What is this sorrow teaching me?” Not merely to endure, but to observe, integrate, and grow. Each setback becomes a mirror, reflecting where skill, patience, or understanding needs refinement. Emotional mastery is developed not by suppressing pain but by facing it directly with courage, awareness, and reflection. In the dojang, this might look like accepting a loss in sparring without defensiveness, analyzing the mistakes made, adjusting strategies, and returning to practice with renewed determination. Over time, these experiences teach adaptability, self-discipline, and humility—qualities far more enduring than any trophy or medal.“
