Our mission is to reveal leadership through service, relationships, and action at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities.

Operating as usual

As you may have guessed by now, we’re no longer going to Chicago this spring break. Sorry for the late communication. We would like to thank everyone for their input and energy.

Ever since the 2020 trip and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, nobody knew for sure when STLF would resume Pay It Forward Tours. We really hoped that this would be the year it happened. However, we weren’t able to put everything together in time.

Although we didn’t meet our goal of a PIFT, we’re encouraged by the progress we did make. The planning phase will be more straightforward next time, with the knowledge and momentum we’ve gained.

Based on how close we came to succeeding in the time we had, we know that a comeback tour is possible. We just need to return to a more reasonable time frame. Later this semester, we’ll start gearing up for PIFT 2024.

We also learned it was still possible to recruit outstanding Bus Core members, even without drawing from the pool of previous trip attendees. The old-timers of this crew want to express our immense gratitude to this year’s Bus Core.

For the next couple months, we plan to focus on community and service in the Twin Cities, and on building our membership. Stay tuned for updates!

We truly hope you have a fun and restful spring break, and that you will join us for upcoming meetings and events.

At long last, we’re officially announcing our destination city! For 2023, STLF will travel to a toddlin’ town that goes by many names: the Second City, the City of Big Shoulders, Chi-town, the Windy City, and … CHICAGO, IL!

Craving deep-dish pizza or Chicago-style hot dogs? Want to take a selfie with “The Bean”? Then keep an eye out for when we open registration, toward the beginning of spring semester. “Bet your bottom dollar, you’ll lose the blues in Chicago, Chicago!”

12/23/2022

Congrats on the end of the semester, everyone!

For our last day of clues, we’ve made a bit of a … scavenger hunt? It’s likely a very quick scavenger hunt, though. We weren’t subtle.

HINTS #4 and #5 are hiding in plain sight on our Twitter profile, twitter.com/STLF_TwinCities.

Another day closer to the reveal!

HINT #3: Only three rivers in the world are known to have permanently reversed direction, and only one of them did so because of humans. That last river runs through this city.

Sure, you ~could~ just use these hints to find the city online, but where’s the fun in that? Patience, my friends ... all will be revealed in time.

HINT #2: According to historical accounts from European explorers, our destination city is named after a wild, edible plant (Allium tricoccum) similar to onions or garlic. Specifically, the name comes from the French rendering of the Myaamia word for the plant.

Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF)

Our Story:

In 2003, four University of Minnesota freshmen in Territorial Hall were deciding upon their spring break plans for the year when they came up with an idea. Instead of going on a traditional trip to a beach for the year, they wanted to do something that would give back to the community. They decided to go on a road trip on a bus across the country, stopping at a different city every day to volunteer in. Over 30 students decided to join them and that year the first Pay It Forward tour was sent out. It was a massive success and led to the creation of the club Students Today, Leaders Forever.

Since then, more than a hundred different Pay It Forward Tours have occurred, sending out thousands of students on buses to different locations to volunteer in and creating lasting friendships and memories. The STLF program has expanded throughout the country into different colleges and high schools. We are the founding chapter at the University of Minnesota, and we offer many volunteer and social activities throughout the year in the Twin Cities area, allowing students to both give back and develop relationships within the community.

All of this culminates in our annual Pay It Forward spring break tour, where 40+ students will travel the country on a bus and volunteer at several locations, just like students did in 2003. Recent locations and stops have included Mount Rushmore, Denver, the Rocky Mountains, Nashville, Atlanta and much more. Through the trip students are able to travel the country, create meaningful friendships and bonds, as well as pay it forward through their acts of service. There’s a reason the Pay It Forward tour is a tradition that has lasted nearly two decades now. There’s nothing quite like it.
