Meet experienced skippers, meet new friends, and enjoy the idyllic park-like surroundings of the UMYC Marina. Snacks and drinks will be available. And don’t worry about life jackets; we’ll have plenty to go around.

Sail Away Sailing School Navigation Instructor Erik Sevrin practices his Celestial Navigation skills during a recent passage from Tortola (BVI) to Newport, RI.

At just 12 years old, Aria has already accomplished something most sailors don’t achieve until adulthood. ⛵

During a liveaboard sailing course in the British Virgin Islands aboard a Sun Odyssey 44, Aria completed her ASA 103 certification alongside her father, Peter, and three adult students.

But what makes this story truly remarkable is not just her age.

According to Capt. Joan Gilmore, Senior Master Instructor of Sail Away Sailing School, Aria was one of the best students she has ever taught when it came to docking, standing turns, and overall helm skills. The confidence, focus, and composure she demonstrated on the water shocked even experienced sailors onboard.

She may be the youngest person ever to earn ASA 103 certification.

Stories like this are a reminder that sailing has the power to build confidence, leadership, discipline, and courage at any age. The future of sailing is incredibly bright, and her journey is only just beginning.

We put our training boat back in Lake Minnetonka today and are ready to go for our May classes. Many thanks to the volunteers who put in several hard hours of work to rig and launch our Hunter 23!!
