“The Turban of Ghiberti” is an evening art history lecture at The Atelier that invites you to look closely at Lorenzo Ghiberti’s celebrated Baptistery doors in Florence. It explores how two self-portraits on the doors trace Ghiberti’s transformation from hands-on workshop craftsman—turbaned like a goldsmith at work—to an intellectual artist grounded in perspective and classical antiquity, and what that shift reveals about Renaissance civic identity and public art. The lecture is led by Allison Baxter, who guides participants through this rich intersection of art and the making of the “Gates of Paradise.”
