Kristal Hansley, a champion for clean energy, made history by founding WeSolar, the first community solar company in the U.S. owned by a Black woman. Her mission is to make renewable energy accessible while lowering utility costs for underserved communities.
During her time at Neighborhood Sun, Hansley saw firsthand how solar power could transform the lives of low-income families. Motivated by this impact, she launched WeSolar, focused on bringing community solar farms to neighborhoods such as Baltimore.
Hansley places a strong emphasis on serving communities — especially Black Americans — that face challenges in energy equity. Through WeSolar, residents can subscribe to solar power blocks or invest in a share of a solar array.
As a trailblazer in a predominantly white male industry, Hansley is reshaping the green energy landscape. Under her leadership, WeSolar continues to expand, delivering affordable, sustainable power to people of all races, genders, and income levels.

Wow! Great idea!
In rural Zimbabwe, solar-powered tricycles are giving women more than just a way to get around. They’re unlocking income, independence, and respect. Through a lease-to-own program, women are running businesses, transporting goods, and even delivering healthcare on these vehicles. And while this is changing their lives, it’s also transforming the communities they serve.
