Dear Friends of Augsburg's Social Work Department,

Our MSW alum and treasured adjunct faculty, Brad Hanson, has entered hospice. Not surprisingly, Brad is still teaching - you'll see it in hIs wisdom, wit, and the tender openness he shares in his FB post. For those of you who were classmates of Brad, or lucky enough to have him as a faculty member, you know of his kind heart, commitment to human well-being, and a smile that can light up a room! ♥️ We love you, Brad! So glad you are part of this awesome Augsburg community!!

MSW students are finishing up the last half of the study abroad course. We left Paris and traveled to Bourdeux to learn about colonization, immigration, and refugee experiences in France. We met with leaders of Rahmi, an organization working with youth to use digital art; oral histories; and historical documents, to tell migration stories of the past to help us understand the present. We also received a guided tour from the director of the Musée d'Aquitaine to learn about Bourdeux's history in the trade of enslaved people.

We are halfway through our travels for MSW students taking the study abroad course, SWK 699: "We Don’t Talk about Race”: Assimilation, Whiteness, and Anti-Racist Practice in France. During our first week in Paris, we met with French social work faculty and students; learned from an association focused on youth organizing and social justice; and participated in neighborhood walking tours to learn more about the complexities of race, class, and immigration in France. Students also found time for fun and sightseeing! The MSW program offers a study abroad course each summer through Augsburg University's Center for Global Education and Experience.
