It is with deep sadness that we share news that has impacted our community.

Ishan Patel, MD, a recent graduate of our Adult Reconstructive Fellowship, traveled to Nepal with his wife, Akanksha Patel, DO; his mother, Shilpa Patel; and his father-in-law, Umeshkumar Patel, on a pilgrimage after his graduation. Tragically, a sudden flood devastated the region during their visit. According to available information, Dr. Patel and his family were likely at their hotel when catastrophic flooding occurred. The hotel was swept away by the floodwaters, and Dr. Patel and his family are currently declared missing.

This situation continues to evolve, and recovery efforts in the region are ongoing. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Dr. Patel, his family, and all those affected by this tragedy.

Exciting research in action at the Minnesota State Fair! Last week, Ann Van Heest, MD, and the study team connected with fairgoers at the University of Minnesota's Research Building, inviting people to demonstrate how they write and hold a pen. Their goal is to expand our understanding of how people who have diseases or serious injuries that affect their hands may use their thumb for handwriting. The team is back at the fair today from 2:30 – 9:00 p.m.

Stop by and join this impactful study!

Come see us at the Minnesota State Fair! Our study team wants to see how a wide range of people write and hold a pen to better understand normal hand function. This information will help surgeons better understand how people with diseases or serious injuries that affect their hands may use their thumbs for handwriting.
