Dakota and Ojibwe Urban Immersion Preschool Project Wicoie Nandagikendan provides Dakhota and Ojibwe preschool language immersion experience.

It builds on the integral connections between culture, literacy, and educational attainment. The project partners with existing programs to provide the classrooms with Ojibwe and Dakota speakers as well as curriculum in those languages.

Minneapolis Native Immersion Program Under Attack, Emergency Donation Request

For 30 years, Wicoie Nandagikendan has supported the next generation of Dakota and Ojibwe language speakers through early childhood immersion classrooms, preK-12 language teacher training, and distributing community meals. Today, we need your help!

We are under siege. Due to the federal freeze on early childhood funding in Minnesota, secured funding is being denied. Our programs are 100% grant funded, with federal funds making up half our annual budget.

We have an immediate need of $50,000 to keep our doors open to the community during this time of unrest. These funds will pay salaries for 10 full-time staff; keep our full-day immersion classroom open, providing consistency and emotional support to 17 children and their families during a time of trauma; and distribute meals to Minneapolis Native families and elders.

This year, Indigenous Peoples’ Day falls on Monday, Oct. 14. It’s a day to celebrate and honor Indigenous culture and contributions, past and present, as well as to recognize that Native peoples are the first inhabitants of the Americas, far before Western colonizers set foot on the land that would come to be known as the United States.

This Indigenous Peoples' Day, stop by Seward Co-op for a special Hot Bar menu and Grab n Go bowls that showcase Indigenous flavors and feature recipes developed by Sean Sherman of Owamni and NĀTIFS ( NĀTIFSorg ). A portion from the sale of each of the bowls will go towards our October SEED recipient, Wicoie Nandagikendan Early Childhood Dakota and Ojibwe Urban Immersion Program ( Wicoie Nandagikendan ). Be sure to round up at the register!
