Big news for our community! 🎉

Congratulations to Dr. Serena Xiong, PhD, MPH, PHDR Faculty and FMCH Assistant Professor, and her Co-Investigator, Dr. Jim Hougas III, MD, FMCH Associate Professor, for being awarded a $40,000 Community Action Research Grant from the Center for Urban & Regional Affairs - CURA.

Their upcoming study will explore how Operation Metro Surge has shaped primary care across M Health Fairview clinics—focusing on how care teams adapted to stay accessible, supportive, and consistent, especially for immigrant and refugee patients.

We’re excited to see how this work helps strengthen care and community resilience. 💛

Program in Health Disparities Research (PHDR) is proud to support the University of Minnesota's 2026 Engaged Scholars Summer Institute. This professional development opportunity is designed for University faculty, staff, and postdoctoral associates seeking to increase their understanding of community-engaged scholarship.

The institute offers a supportive network in which attendees from throughout the University's five campuses can explore and develop together core skills needed for this important work.
